My .02 on the subject. I have generally found Porsche owners to be just as clueless as I'm sure Corvette owners are who buy the car for name or status. For the Porsche enthusiast/driver however, I've found them to be generally thoughtful. The only mis-impression I still get from informed Pcar people relates to how the vette handles. I often get the "you're quicker in a straight line, but you've got to turn sometime comment".
At the track, I find most Porsche folks to be great. As they have much more club racing, I find most of them are very good drivers (which always minimizes the differences between handling and horsepower). I wish that we Vette folks had more club racing stuff. My experience is that I pass most slower Porsche drivers and get passed by the quick ones on road courses. As we get more Vette folks into competitive driving, I think the Porsche folks in general will begin to come around and recognize the value of the Vette.
Black Z06 - One Pcar and an S2000 in my old coupe. Had I been in the Z, I think the blur effect from the speed of the pass would have likely screwed up the picture
don't forget those SB Mopars! i liked the article in hot rod or car craft or PHR a couple of years ago (2001 maybe) talking about the prototype cars the dodge boys were running at le mans. they had a copy of mark kinser's sprint car motor and were making BIG power, but IIRC the chassis/aerodynamics hurt them.... oh, and they kept breaking transmissions-- big surprise-- that's what torque does guys.
combined with the c5r's, caddy's, and panoz's they said it gave the euro guys a taste of what good ole' american iron (or alum in this case) can do-- and how badass they sound doing it!
Interesting thread. I roasted a 911 TT the other day getting on the interstate and I wasn't sure if it was the driver or the car. I was surprised to beat him, as I thought the 911 TT was the be-all and end-all of performance street cars.
I actually spotted him on the underpass and was hoping he was getting on the interstate. He was a good distance out ahead of me as he entered the 270 degree on-ramp. It is a decreasing radius ramp, so you can get into trouble if you aren't paying attention. I rocketed into the ramp to try and catch him and sure enough, by the time we were entering the interstate, I was about a length behind him.
As we entered the three-lane interstate, it was all clear and I jumped to the far left lane, and he jumped to the middle lane. I was hitting the top of second gear and shifting into third as I went by him, and I was still changing lanes so the back-end of my car popped to the side a little as I hit third gear.
He was definitely in it all the way, but I pulled around him and was three+ lengths by the top of third (~100mph). I shifted into fourth and let out, coasted down to about legal and cruised on. He never caught up to me and I was getting off the interstate one exit down.
I was feeling pretty good, and as I mentioned - a little surprised!
Porsche's are no competition on the track except for the exotic ones. I usually pass every one on the track, the only one that killed me was a cup car at road atlanta last weekend.
brother you will find similar arrogance on this Forum or probably any other...we are all clueless when it comes to our addiction.
:iagree: I agree. I really like Porsche's. They are one of the few auto companies with so much racing heritage. I've been to several of the PCA events and they have always been very nice. The serious drivers know to respect the C5.
