Hey guys you need to go to the Porsche forum http://forums.rennlist.com/ and see how confused these guys are about the capabilities ou your cars. Click on the the 911 forum & browse down to "got my feelings hurt by a Mustang" or something like that. I own a 928 Porsche but I have no dilusions about my car being in the same category as yours. You will be stunned (and maybe insulted) by the ignorance & arrogance of many of these people. I was at Z06 fest in Bowling Green last year. Awesome machinery.
On that thread there are posts stating that a Z06 MAY be MARGINALLY faster than a n/a 996 (current version 911) and basicly that if the race lasts more than a few seconds, parts will start falling off the Corvette. I have been trying to explain things to them but without much success. Go take a look. My posts are by "Carlos" over there.
Oh brother. Thats bull poopy.
We put more to the ground than a 911 makes. simple laws of physics apply.
The problem with most new Porsche owners is much like that of a lot of new vette owners. They aren't into the heritage, and they just purchased a car for the status. With that most of these newbies aren't gear heads, and thus believe what a sales person tells them. They'll learn at a red light one day. BUt they'll probably shift before 3k rpm anyway.
Most Porsche drivers have no idea what they have just know that they are driving a Porsche and spent way too much for their car. In doing so anything that costs less than their car is viewed as crap. The only Porsche that can hang is a Turbo and even then the driver better be pretty good. Hell I will call out a GT2 if I have to. I could by two if not three Z06's for the price of that car. Give me a break 911 owners.
Carlos, I really can't comment about the 911 turbo because I never drove one but I can tell you about MY experience with one in my neighbor. First I have a '02 Z06 with only an x-pipe and vortex ram air induction.(totalling $500 in mods)
Whenever this 911 "finds" me at the track we run neck and neck. Several times I have taken him. So all those porsche 911 turbo owners who bad mouth the Z06 have never driven or run into one.
If you look at that thread you'll see a lot of discussion about "The Swamp Monster." It's a turbo look 911 with a 630 hp small block Chevy in place of the Porsche 6. This car drives these guys grazy. THey cant beleive that a "pushrod" iron V8 can smoke even the hottest of their uber-wagens.
While you're there take a look at the 996TT board. I've seen claims of 700, 800 and even one guy claiming 954 hp form a streetable 6cyl. Look on Stage XXXXX cjv claims 720 at the wheels (4wd).
I think that porsche DRIVERS as appose to Porsche OWNERS are well aware to the Z’s ability. Most guys I met during track days look at the Z as a serious competition. Being a former GT2 guy, I have nothing bad to say about that car’ it’s a remarkable piece of equipment but since I totaled it and crossed over to the dark side I can not see myself spending another 180K for a car with almost the same performance level as my Z.
In '85 I got a 928 and it was the coolest car I've ever owned. At 5,000 miles it cost me 1327.44 in maintenance. At 14,550 miles it cost 3609.57 for injector service/repair. I spent 2,297.09 to fix the electrical system at 19k miles and sold it. It cost 43 thousand dollars to own a 928 for 32 months in maintenance and depreciation. My '01 Z06 cost 16,500 to operate for 25 months. When I bought my '03 Z06, it was the first time in my life to own the exact same model a second time. The Porsche was the coolest, but the Z06 is the Best.

Most of the Porsches that you'll meet on the road will have their hands full with a Z06. Unless you're next to a GT2(rare) your chances of ruining their day are pretty good. They are great cars but in the bang-for-the-buck category they don't stand a chance. Nobody wants to get beat by a car that costs half the price. :chevy
:bb v Don't even THINK about challanging a GT-2 on a road course unless you are modified!!! Those things are WICKED FAST.... and most people willing to spend 180 LARGE on an agressive sports car can drive!!!
A guy I refer to as my "porsche" buddy @ work will drive his ultra clean, highly modified 944 turbo to work on tuesdays to go to the "grudge drags" at IRP. He's the only Porsche guy I know who only does the 1/4 mile thing :steering:
May be there will be a post in regards to a yellow twin turbo porsche getting spanked....bad by a z06. I had a chick about 35yrs old or so and guy in a yellow twin turbo pull next to me wanting to run. I spanked em 4 times (line, 3rd, 4thx2) ...bus links. I exited and they followed motioning for me to pull over. They were shocked. They could not believe that they just got beat by "just a corvette" and he told me that if my car was stock they were going to take that porsche and drive it up the salesman's a... He apparently told them it was the "fastest car on road" lol lol lol The girl had just recently bought the car. Now I know you could say that it was a chick driving and she did not know what she was doing....that is why on every run except the 1st I gave them 2-3 car lengths head start...I am not saying that porsches are crap. I just think they are a lot of money for a luxury "bug" with some power. Note: I have driven "hard" 3 twin turbos. They do handle well, but damn they are small and too quiet. :chevy

Maybe that's the norm in your area, but not so in southern CA! There are PLENTY of cars costing from $150K and up here in lala land that I see all the time. The drivers I've met and talked to are not drivers, they are owners, out to impress others with the cars, not with their driving abilities.

Yep Trumper and I are just good ol'boys living down here in GEORGIA where we even think a z06 is an expensive car, not just a cheap car that is a great deal for how fast it goes.
OK... I own a well-modded '98 C5 383 Stroker & a stock '99 911 coupe on which I've only installed a Short Throw shifter & Porsche Sports Exhaust. The C5 dynoed at 446 RWHP & 464 RWTQ on a Mustang dyno. The Porsche has 296 stock hp AT THE CRANK before the sports exhaust install, putting its RWHP somewhere around 250. That's a huge difference.
The Here are my two cents:
The C5 is brutally fast compared to the 911-- no comparison in terms of acceleration. The C5 also feels more race car like vs the 911 given the view from the cockpit. In terms of acceleration, in wide open areas I wouldn't hesitate to run against any 911 or lesser Porsche.
The 911, on the other hand, is more compact & feels more agile in city driving & also on tight windy roads. It feels like an econobox next to the C5.
In terms of materials & quality: Both interiors are sub par. The vette has a cool instrument cluster, but aside from that everything else reminds me too much of rental Luminas. The interior is more durable that the 911's though. I like the looks of the 911's interior better, but touch points wear faster (i.e. the door opening latch's silver color eventually wear thin, the e-brake boot, shifter leather & steering wheel leather wear more quickly than the vette's (so I replaced 'em w/carbon fiber). Mechanically both are very good.
Which do I prefer? Tough question-- I like 'em both. If you ask my kids though, they like the vette hands down (must be evolution of the species-- maybe they know better!).
I'd say that in terms of value there is NO comparison-- the vette pumps out more HP for much less $$$. Also service is much easier to arrange for wherever you might be in the US. That's why I bought my 911 at about 55% of list price with 25K miles-- I wouldn't pay sticker less haggling for a 911 but I'd consider it for a C5. BTW Porsche makes about $12K on each 911 it sells-- that's one of the heftiest mark ups in the business (they also are now one of the most profitable car companies in terms of incom/slaes) and it's reflected in their prices. Their chairman has been very clear about maintaining premium pricing & canned the Porsche USA Director becuase he decided to offer incentives for sales last year!
Oh yeah, if you want to modify either one, modding the vette is much easier, less costly & there are more alternatives. Porsche extracts a lot from their 3.4 or 3.6 liter engines & it's tough to get more out of them. there's no replacement for displacement!
One big difference: the C5 forum has TONS more info than the Porsche lists, and a lot more tech info too.
Does that mean I like the C5 hands down over the 911? No, I like them both.
They all seem to have no clue about what an SB ford or a SBC motor can and will do on pump gas, or what it can do in race trim. They also pretty much lump the c5 in with the c3 and c4 in terms of squeaks, rattles, and build quality.
Sorry they don't have their facts straight. But, I think if they look at post count and user count on here vs there they will find we are waaaay ahead. I make this statement based upon the last post I saw which was that they had more users and more posts.... Not...
