Default Chevy sez

Posted this once before...I have a curious "popping" noise in the rear end.....occurs at low speed when I load and unload the drive train...Chevy sez.....it is gear lash?? Bugs the heck out of me and I am wondering when something is going to give out. I have heard gear lash before and it does not sound like this.....Anybody got any ideas?

Common problem caused by rust on the rear axle splines :yesnod: where the splines go into the hub...Have the splines cleaned and lubed with anti-seize compound

Also,if the exhaust has been changed, make sure the lower sway bar bolts are tight...This bolt is also the rear lower control arm bolt, and if not snug the control arm will shift causing a poping noise

Your problem sounds like something I encountered when my 2002 Z06 had about 4200 miles. I would get a "clanking/popping" sound at low speeds when loading and unloading the drive train. My wife thought I was being hyper-critical, but I didn't want to take any chances with my 50K super-car. I took my Z in for service and the Chevy mechanic informed me that there was a little too much "play" in the rear differential. They took the differential apart and put in 7 "F-Shims". This is what the work order stated after the work was completed: "Excessive clearance removed differential to replace ring gear and pinion and pinion bearing housing adjusted backlash and bearing preloads. [no heavy acceleration or high speed driving for at least 250 miles allow for proper break-in of new components]" This fixed the problem because I haven't heard the clanking/popping since getting my Z back. All this work was done under warranty, of course. I hope this helps.

I have the same problem at about 14k miles. I had this problem on my 2000 at about this time as well, and took it in. They replaced the rear axle, disc-to-disc. I am not thrilled, it is ANNOYING and I guess I'm going to have to pick a good week or so to be without my 50k car and drive whatever piece of crap they give me in the meantime. (Depending on where I take it... I have one dealer that takes care of me. Performance Chevrolet has put me in C5's while waiting before, but they are an hour away.)

Let me know what you end up doing. I worry something in the back is going to break at 90mph in a turn...
