Default Shift lights?

I tried a search on this and only found limited info on this. I want basically an LED shift light that is the size of a pen, or close to it. What brands install the easiest and are pretty nice to work with? Do I have to locate a wire under the dash or should I go directly to some wire off the computer connectors?

I am not even sure how to get to the computer on the vette, my Z28's PCM was located right off the firewall and was easy to access.

Any ideas on this topic? It would be neat if somebody made a module that would flash the HUD when it was time to shift, pretty stealth!

Actually, your HUD does have a shift light, but it doesn't stand out enough to be easily noticeable in your peripheral vision. Try a search, as they have been mentioned regularly, for the Raptor and Harlan shiftlights, which sound like the style you're after, although they're thicker than a pencil. Harlan has gotten some bad press for poor service, however. Good luck

I did a search for shiftlight, one word, and found the installation pics and which wire to use. Thanks! Ordered a black w/yellow LEDs from raptor!

I have the Raptor installed .. up next to the sun visor... very good position.. can't help but to see it when you approch the red line.

I was wondering if anyone has followed the white wire from the PCM into the car either physically, or via the service manuals? It would seem easier to access the wire from within the car then to jack the car up, pull the wheel off, reset the PCM by disconnecting the battery, then run a wire thru the firewall grommet. Just wondering. If I go the full route, I may run a continuity check on possible wires to find the right one just to help others out in the future.

TeamSpeed---That's a good thought. If it's the tach wire, shouldn't it be going someplace INSIDE the car....like to the passenger floorboards or to the intrument cluster? If I wasn't so lazy AND if I had ordered a Raptor, I'd open my service manuals and find out!

Yes, it is in the mass of wires in the passenger footwell. I was not confident on finding it so I went to the source, the PCM.

I never noticed it on mine. Are you sure the HUD has a shift light?

Shylor--That's the point....it's hard to notice!!! You have to have the tach portion of the HUD activated, and zing the motor up there, and you'll see the shift light. Of course, you could look in your owners manual to see where it's located in the display.

I have never seen my shift light come on in my Z? Maybe I don't have it in the correct mode, I will have to check it out.

I haven't done anything with the install of the shift light yet. Since I do not know which wire in the passenger footwell is the tach, I will have to do a little research for the benefit of the vette community when I have everything out!

Yeah, you need to be in "tachometer mode". You can have every other display on (and you'll never see the shift light!!) or go to the tach only or tach and speed modes, and that gives a better picture. The shift light gets lost in all the other silly displays--gas, water temp, oil temp, etc etc etc.

Thanks Tracy, good info, I will use the tach mode only from now on, as long as the radar detector is hooked up :jester

Tach only will show you the shift light, but tach/mph is probably what you'll prefer.

As for the radar detector...it should ALWAYS be on, regardless what your tach is doing!!!

I have a red Harlan shift light in my Z28 and used a blue Harlan shift light in my Z06.

The upside down main computer on the C5's is behind the passenger side wheel well, below the battery. There’s a rubber grommet through the firewall where you can run the wire. I have also tried to trace the white tach wire, but it’s runs into a big loom of wires, so pretty much disappear from there. You can see in the picture below where I tapped the tach wire.

I like how compact the Harlan shift light is. Mine is mounted here.
