I am leaning in the ZO6 direction and have a question about interior noise. Is the ZO6 any louder on the inside at road cruising speed than the regular C5?? Thanks. Sid.
get a $99 ecklers z06 partition and the road noise is gone and the stereo is awesome. great mod.
You might be getting some *slightly* biased opinions. The Z06 has significant road noise, even with a partition. Some road surfaces are just amazingly loud in the Z06. It's the tires, after switching to pilot sports I realized just how much of the Z06 noise was from the tires.
There are some nice DIY articles about insulating the whole Z interior with great results. I would guess with the insulation, road noise may actually be lower than a coupe.
I agree, the interior noise is rather loud in a Z06. I also went with pilot sports and Andy's Partition which cut it down considerably. I'm now in the process of installing dynomat throughout the whole interior and doors. Very anxious to see how much of a difference it will make.
Ahhh, but wait!! The Supercar tires on my Z are MUCH quieter than the Runflats on my 2000 FRC. And, the stock Z exhaust is quieter than the BB Rt 66 on my 2000. So from my point of view, the Z is a quieter car.
And yes, I also use a trunk partition, which makes a huge difference in noise and A/C capacity.
I have measured the noise level for my '03 Z06 at 75 Db, "A" Weighted and 95 Db "C" Weighted at 65 MPH on flat concrete, using a Radio Shack Noise Level Meter at close to ear level.
On the non-skid concrete at 80 MPH, the tire noise drowns out the engine and exhaust sounds, along with conversation at less than shouting level with your passenger. On asphalt, the tire noise is not bad at all. (Most of the tire noise comes through the trunk lid, as it is a thin piece of fiberglass with absolutely no insulation.)
Finding this unacceptable, I purchased a "Carpeted Trunk Lid Insert" #1044, available at $125.00 from Design Specialties, (designspec.com). I added two layers of polyfill (available at any fabric store) to the top of the insert and installed it to my trunk lid. Although the Db levels measured the same (the Radio Shack Level Meter is non-linear meaning it does not measure all frequencies equally) I can now hear the exhaust note and my passenger at reasonable conversation levels on the non-skid concrete.
This added 4 lbs. to the car. (So now I have to lose 4 lbs.) I am now adding additional insulation to other areas of the trunk using Reflectix Insulation, which weighs nothing. Seems to help a little.
It makes the ride a lot more enjoyable. Recommend it highly.

I'm not sure it's going to be noticeably louder than the C4 in your profile. As has been said, the tires are the primary source, but that's only on certain surfaces.
GM left the sound damping material and carpet out to save weight. You will hear engine and drivetrain noises that you have never heard before also, maybe you should get the coupe.

To be fair, you can still get the POWER and HANDLING of the Z06, and with a little effort (I second - or third - the posters who recommend a partition, can't imagine my Z06 without it) you can quiet the thing down to reasonable levels inside the car. You may weigh 20-30# more than a stock Z06, but you will still be way ahead of a coupe...

I agree, with very little work and the partition you should be all set, and you'll have the "Z"
:D :D
I was worried about nvh and I just tested verts and Z's, but I don't find it objectionable at all. I'm not sure the coupe would be significantly quieter for any reason besides the different tires. The Z's light-years ahead of the C4 coupe I had.
With the partition, in normal use the noisiest thing in my car is the fuel pump.
