With the partition, in normal use the noisiest thing in my car is the fuel pump.

is this with the ignition on "before" starting the engine?
No, during normal driving, engine running, car moving, etc. The fuel pump whine is clearly audible.

hmm - i thought that whine was from the tranny since we are almost sitting on top of it. i'll listen a little more closely.

If the whine is a constant pitch/frequency, it's the fuel pump. It's directly behind the driver's seat. If it changes with road speed or engine speed in a gear, it's a driveline noise.

The fuel pump noise is also interrupted when the brakes are applied and the brake lights come on.

Noisy fuel pumps are not uncommon on a couple of other models, including Suburbans, iirc. The problem is that while you can have them replaced, the replacement one might be noisier still.

I for one enjoy the sounds off my Z06. It reminds me of when I was a kid and had my hot rod. I didn't buy the car because it was nice and quiet. I have another car for that. I also love the feel of the ride in the Z06. It gives great road feedback.

It's not a luxury car, it's a sports car and acts like one.

If you're worried about interior noise, why consider the Z06? Lexus makes fine, quiet, cars.

OH I have a partition, weighs less than a pound though.
CPTZ06:
I have one of the older, 15# models. It works very well and looks OEM. But I should probably look at my options now.

OTHERS:
To those of you who say, "it is a hot rod, not a Lexus." I would reply that some of the noises discussed here are not normal. The excessive fuel pump noise is NOT normal and can be fixed. I never hear mine, and never heard it in my coupe.

I had a coupe for two years before getting my Z06, so I am familiar with standard C5 noises and I'm not complaining about the tranny - it sounds the same in the coupe.

But for the person who said they don't know what would be louder about the Z06 over the coupe, it is. A lot louder.

I had BOTH cars overlapping for quite a while while I tried to sell the coupe and there is a noticable difference. The Z06 lacks a great deal of soundproofing.

I have no problem with the Z06 having a little more noise than the coupe, but the removable partition should be an option, or even standard - it reduces exhaust and rear tire noise drastically with little or no downside. And for the 4-5# it would add to put a little more sound deadener in key places, it would be a very good trade.

Perhaps some of you don't use the car as a daily driver?

Ultimately though, I'm fairly happy with the sounds of my Z06 now that I have added a partition. Well, except for the squeaking dashboard and clunking passenger door - but those are poor workmanship, not design flaws.

I agree. :iagree: I used to have a 91 MustangLX5.0tricked out w/ a 110L fuel pump.The thing whinned like a cranky 2 yr. old.
:cry
I learned to ignore it or make the stereo louder because it helped the car go 12.80@Englishtown!
I just yesterdy installed Andy's partition. It was a breeze to install. The hardest part was fitting my 6'2"body in the trunkspace to drill the 2 holes! :) The dam thing really works! I was very skeptical at first, but I'd say it cuts down the road&exhaust noise at least 30%!!!! As for helping w/ the A/C,my unit cranks out the cold air,in fact, I end up lowering the fn usually down to 1st speed. :hurray:

Compared with my 97 fuel pump which whined like a jet engine, this thing is as quiet as can be. Also, the tires compared with my 97 are MUCH quieter, and the wind noise on this one is MUCH reduced. Also, most of the rattles from my 97 are gone. In general, the Z06 is a much much quieter car to my ears and I hope to improve that further.

Most of the time I spend behind the wheel, 22000 miles worth, I "DRIVE". I'm completely "engaged" moving around in traffic, and "letting it rip" every chance that I get.

If someone has a more passive driving style, why get a Z06 in the first place?! When I'm driving, I'm almost oblivious to any noise; I'm having way too much fun! The only time someone might notice the noise is during "steady speed" interstate driving, especially trying to listen to the radio.

The tires can really "thump" on a rough road, and it can be hard to sleep, as a passenger, but not impossible. I do have a divider which helps a lot, but sometimes we leave it out, or if we have lots of luggage. It has to come out to make extra room.

Overall, I don't think noise is that much of a negative. I have never been in a coupe. I didn't buy it to be quiet like my Lincoln Town Car. :steering:

My 06 is definitely louder then my Coupe.

I'm considering the partition but...I don't wanna lose the roar of the exhaust!

LOL!

What one person describes as "much louder' may be another person's 'louder' or 'similar.' Even 'loud' depends on what cars you're used to (and how good your ears are). And different sounds bother different people.

The tires and the exhausts are the basic differences. There are differences in factory soundproofing, but how effective it is remains debatable. A partition pretty much cancels those out.

I'd suggest trying to find some road tests with noise levels or driving some and drawing your own conclusions. The cars you've owned, the way you drive and the roads you drive on may lead you to different conclusions than other owners.

I had a 98 C-5 and 99 Hardtop equipped with run flats. My 03 Z06 certainly has less tire noise than either of those. The run flats are really noisy on certain surfaces. The Z06 does have a little more aggressive exhaust sound than either of the other two, but I certainly don't find it objectionable particularly at cruise. I do not have a partition. The only time the exhaust really barks is when you get on it. Pretty good sound though. :)

I put 49k on my 2000 coupe and I've got 14k on my Z06. I "drive" the cars. But a LOT of that driving ends up being on an interstate with orange cones on each side and two lanes of crowded traffic. That is life, and I can't control it.

I drive quite agressively when it is (IMHO) reasonably safe, and I do take weekend drives in the mountains where I would probably scare 95% of the people on this board (and the other 5% are crazy! ;) ). On those mountain trips, you are right - who cares about tire noise and exhaust noise. But when I'm riding with my fiancee to Phantom of the Opera on Friday night and trying to have a conversation, I'd like to hear over the tires.

If someone has a more passive driving style, why get a Z06 in the first place?! When I'm driving, I'm almost oblivious to any noise; I'm having way too much fun! The only time someone might notice the noise is during "steady speed" interstate driving, especially trying to listen to the radio.
Yeah, like I said! :)

Me too, but usually the luggage performs the same function.

Overall, I don't think noise is that much of a negative. I have never been in a coupe. I didn't buy it to be quiet like my Lincoln Town Car. :steering:
I'd agree with that. But I have been in a coupe, and the Z06 is STARTLINGLY more noisy than the coupe. And you even admit to having the partition. For anyone who drives daily, it is a must. GM should put one in the car or at least offer it as an option.
