Is reverse syncronized in the T-56? I don't think it is?
Try placing the transmission in a forward gear (1st-6th) before placing it in reverse. It should not grind provided that the car isn't moving or the clutch is engaged.

It should not grind going into reverse if you are stopped. Grinding when stopped, car and trans, is a sign of a problem that should be loooked at before you can not back up at all.
