Don't be too quick to assume these are the only two worthy shifters. I have the Breathless shifter, and it is a darn good piece of kit. You will find others on this forum with the same opinion by doing a search.
I have a hurst and love it. A lot shorter compared to a stock shifter (but I'm sure you already knew that). Love the tension adjustable springs. When you see and feel the Hurst next to the stock piece, you can really see and feel the difference in build quality. Now as far as comparing the Hurst with other aftermarket shifters, I don't know. I've never used anything else. :steering:
Well I guess I've tried both, but the B&M was in my mustang and the hurst is in my vette. I really liked the B&M in the stang, but after doing research I went Hurst and don't regret it at all!. The heard the B&M is the stiffest of all. When I got the Hurst it was still a bit stiff, but I loosened the stock spring setup by turning the hex nuts and it's perfect. The Hurst is a very quality piece.
Do a search like Racer said, though I am not sure I agree with his conclusion though:)
I have owned both, prefer the Ripper - to each his/her own. They both are significantly different/better than stock but accomplish their task in a very different way and feel.
I recommend you drive someone's car with each in it and see which feel YOU like better. It is mostly about feel, shift action, how positive the gates are, and resistance - the feel between these two is very differnt.
I have let 3 people take mine for a short spin, all 3 now have Rippers. As someone mentioned there are other good pieces out there, with their own fans, including Breathless and Mallet. Hurst and Ripper sell a lot more I believe so you will run across more of them to "try".
FWIW. Good luck with your purchase, you really can't go wrong with either.
The difference from the stock shifter is astounding and makes the car much more fun to drive. The build quality is impecible (sp?) and the ability to adjust the stiffness is neat too.
No experience with any others but I'm VERY happy with the Hurst!
Looks like I am going to place my order for the hurst, everyone has good things to say about it. The stock shifter is just to loose and not percise at all.
The best post I have seen was by Hib H on this subject. I think it's on the idaho vette site. I have a ripper, I bought a hurst when they first came out, took a look at it and resold it. I like the shorter throw of the ripper. Both are good, it's getting the one that fits your needs best that counts. Ric
Make sure to check your hex nuts on the hurst if you race the car. I have been having some tranny problems and I think it may have been from this 1.5 year old hurst starting to wear out. The hex nut actually fell into the shifter while I was at the track tonight and made the car get stuck in 3rd. I thought I broke the tranny. I am also having some grinding in 4th and it may have been caused by one side of the hurst being looser and not centering properly. Im gonna try it tomorrow to see how it feels but the damage to the synchro is already done.
