I just checked my oil after an oil change.... and about 1,000 miles on the new oil..
looks like I am about a half quart down.... half way between the full marks and "add" marks
also it seems like I have about one quart of oil loss when I get my oil changed ( about every 6-7,000 miles )
is this normal...?
thought the 03's werent suppose to be oil burners...
I know one quart every 6,000 miles isnt much ...but still
thanks
Kevin
p.s. car was bought new and has 18,000 miles on it now

I have about 3K on my '03 Z06 & have had 3 oil changes. Your comments, above, describe my experience exactly.
1/2 quart in 1000 miles is no where normal. I trust this is happening with Mobil 1. How are the Z's being driven? Take a cold measurement on the dip stick, and again after 1000 miles to be exact on your usage. Are you changing your own oil too? Just can not trust many lube techs. You probably already performed the for mentioned anyway. Good luck, and if what you say is true, go see your favorite dealership.
just checked the oil again ( cold ) ..... definitely half way between the "add" and "full" marks
dealership has done all my oil changes.... I always double check and ask them to make sure they are putting in Mobil 1... they "assure" me that they are .... ( FWIW )
My car is street driven....I do take it to redline several times a week....but its mostly half normal stop and go traffic...and half highway
but the last 1,000 miles was a highway trip...right after the oil change
btw - is one quart every 6,000 miles okay ?
also - is there a way to determine that it is INDEED synthetic oil in my car and not "regular" oil ?
can I send a sample somewhere....if so, where ?
I would say it sounds like a bit much. I have 3000 on my oil and have only added 1/2 quart. This includes 4 days worth of de's. Ditto on the question about how your oil was changed. You probably already know this, but after adding the new oil, you have to run the engine for a few minutes, let the car sit for about 10 min, then check the oil level. If you (or the lube tech) did not do this, then it is possible that you are not burning oil but simply driving around with a 1/2 quart too little oil to begin with. I always have to add extra oil after doing this procedure; after that the level stays very steady.
If the dealer put 6.5 quarts in the car, as the manual recommends, you will show oil halfway between the marks on the dipstick. It takes a full 7 to take it to the "max" line. So when you are at the bottom mark of the operating area you are actually only a 1/2 quart down.
Put 7 quarts in it next time and keep an eye on it, you are not using oil IMO.
Kevin,
Next time you change your oil, check it in the morning when the motor is cold on level ground to verify its postion on the dip stick. Now do your 1000 mile runs. Again, check it in the morning when it is cold. Oil tends to hide for a while inside the motor, this is why you want to wait several hours. The reason you want to do this is because of the type issue you are trying to resolve. Make sure you are on level ground both times when you do your checks.
I think everyone understands that when you check your oil, the car must be level. But the manual states that oil should be checked when it is warm. Because of the large engine, you should wait 10 to 15 minutes after shutting the car off in order for all the oil to drain back down. So, why check when the engine is cold? Thanks.
Regardless of how much oil you run in your engines try this, next time the oil is changed let it sit..pull the dipstick and with a scribe or a nail scribe a line on the backside of the stick. This way you will always know just how much oil your losing or not.

You answered your own question. Because all the oil does not drain down in a short amount of time. Oil is nice and thick when cold too. Much easier to see. Either way check it at the same intervals, 15 min. or cold, or whatever. Make your own mark, like suggested by the bowtiebandit, but I think the marks already supplied are sufficient. Maybe you need to set the rings?
