Default Spark Plug Pucks ????

QUOTE FROM C5 GENERAL FORUM:

"I called GM about pucks coming off of their spark plugs and they said they never heard of that happening.I told them that this is happening on a regular basis and the problem need to be addresed. The service dept.at GM told me to call the delership and notify them of the problem I was having,so I did,They said they have never heard of that happening and there was no service bulletins or recalls on the spark plugs.
This bothers me just thinking about the pucks bouncing around off my cylinder walls until it gets lodged somewhere or passes threw the system.
I am going to call GM again in a few days and let them know just how many there are out there with this problem, thast we are concerned about this and would like it if someone would look in to it and get back to me asap or am I supposed to change the spark plugs myself in my 50,000 dollar,2003 corvette myself.
Please leave a post letting me know how many pucks you had left, miles when you changed them and year for your car,I will copy your posts and fax them to GM and let you know what I hear..."

Apparently a puck is....."Instead of using a quality platinum plug chevy used a standard plug with a little "puck"of platinum across from the electrode, this piece is falling off the plug,I have not checked mine yet, but I only have 3,000 miles on 03. ".....QUOTE

Well, actually ALL platinum plugs have a "tip or puck" welded on, some just a circular button or "puck" on the tip, and others a platinum section maybe 3/16th long welded to the center electrode and surrounded with ceramic(Bosch). However, the GM/AC plugs DO have the platinum on both center and ground electrodes, where as most of the others have a conventional ground, and only platinum on the tip. The problem lies in the difficulty of a reliable weld in this highly stressed location(high temps and pressures). In 1 35k mile LT1 engine I had 3 pucks missing from the ground electrode and 2 from the center, in another LT1 I had 4 missing total in around 23k miles. Both these were in the mid 90's. However, my 103k mile 98 Tahoe has the original AC platinum plugs with ALL pucks intact! Maybe the later years are better?

Removed my original plugs at 15K miles (Denso). All the puck there though I had to use a magnifying glass to see them. They are extremely small, so I don't think they will harm the engine if they fall off. They either become part of the head, piston, or exhaust system:) George
