Do a search, you will find answers that range from 1 mile to 5000 miles for the first oil change. If it makes you feel better doing one at 500, do it. It's your money.
You probably do not have to change the oil at 500 miles.
I would, I did and I will do so again on my next Vette. I love to play with the Z, and I love to crawl under it and pull off the oil filter. :chevy :steering:
Congrats! Take good care of it, and hopefully it will return the favor. I changed mine early also. All that assembly lube, dust, metal fragments, BZZZZZ there’s the break bell technician goes on a break - motor sitting wide open for who knows how long, how it gets assembled all comes into play.

You just have to agree with good common sense. :iagree: Congrats on the new car!
You will get a ton of answers...... that's for sure.
Changing your motor oil after break-in is old school, as these motors do not come from the factory with break-in oil. The LS1 and LS6 do not require this change. Will it hurt.... no. All of the metal shavings have already circulated in your oil and are now trapped by the oil filter. Heck, you could change your oil daily if you wanted. Its just with a good quality synthetic, you don't need to change your oil after break-in or every 3000 miles. This procedure dates back to the time of mineral oil usage in engines. I do see the logic in changing the oil to add the magnetic plug and a better oil filter, so this makes sense.
I'm on my 2nd C5. Both are changed at 5000 mile intervals (convenience and daily driving.) The DIC says 7000 miles for my Z. Neither has burned significant amounts of oil between changes and both have dynoed at normal levels. I am currently burning up the equal of 1qt in 20,000 miles.
You don't need to change the oil at any lower levels than what the DIC says, as long as you use synthetic oil that meets GM4718M specs. However, if you have extra $$ and enjoy working on your car....... go for it. You will not cause any damage from frequent oil changes.
Re: When to do the first Oil Change??? (TexasRedZ06)
Agree, I changed the first oil when the DIC hit about 28% oil life remaining. My car does not consume a drop of oil now either. It even looked "clean" when I changed it.
The right answer is: At LEAST as often as the DIC says.
As long as you do at as soon as the computer or manual says so, or more often, you're golden. Keep records and use the good stuff.
I've read that review many times........ gives me a headache.
Seems the Mobil 1 or Pur1 is the best based upon what he tested.
Unfortunately, he never got around to the ACDelco Ultraguard Gold. I'm going on a limb by extrapolating that the Ultraguard has all the advantages of the best made Champion/Bosch/Deutsch filter with a synthetic media instead of paper media. One day, maybe I'll cut up one of my $8 Ultraguard Gold's and compare to the other filters on this website.
One thing for sure.......... stay away from the Fram made filters!!

:iagree: What he said, most definately! Although, I am not sure about the magnetic plug thing. I thought are engines are a great deal of aluminum, a non-magnetic metal.
I did my first one at 500 miles, second at 2K and thereafter at 3K plus or minus depending on track time. I also recommend upgrading the filter to an Amsoil, UPF, K&N or Mibil 1.
No doubt this is overkill, but it is what I prefer and recommend. Other opinions will vary :)
The Z06 uses the UPF 44/46, don't know about the LS1. As far as oil goes lots of opinions there as well. For street use, in Georgia, I recommend Mobil 10W30 year round. Some who track their cars a lot run a 20W40 synthetic during the summer months - IMO that is fine too. As far as the K&N advantage in design for flow-back it is my understanding that this only applies to side mount filters - but I am not an expert on that either :)
