Re: What does Z06 stand for? Does anyone know? (TZScales)
Z06 was the 3 character option code for a racing package first offered on the '63 Corvette. 36 gallon tank, brakes, suspension, etc... upgraded for the track. Very rare, very collectable... has since then been associated with high performance.
Re: What does Z06 stand for? Does anyone know? (TZScales)
General Motors usually gives "performance" options the first letter "Z" ... so you have the Z28 Camaro, etc.
As stated above, the Z06 option (it is "Z" zero six - it is a number - is usually pronounced "Z" "oh" "six" as if it was the letter "O") was first available on the 1963 Stingray, and the option became known as the "race" option. When Chevy decided to build a performance version of the C5, a "racer's" version, if you will, they resurrected the option number and used it for the car name.

Chevrolet uses the actual factory production codes to identify options. These are officially known as RPOs or Regular Production Order. Z06 included the 350 cu. inch engine, 405 hp, 6 speed manual transmission (RPO-MN6), FE4 (another RPO) suspension, HUD, special wheels, special FRC body, special exhaust, special seats, etc., etc.

:iagree: The Idaho Corvette Page does a good job of detailing the various codes of our beloved cars. Here is a page from the original 1963 option codes. Scroll down to the last coding of the first subset and you will see the Z06 option package. They called it a "Special Performance Equipment" option that year and it was optioned out on only 199 vehicles. At $1,818.45 it was the most expensive option to be had. http://www.idavette.net/facts/63.htm

Not to nitpick ... but ....
RPO = Regular Production Option
The Z06 has the M12 tranny, not the MN6
The Z06 has the LS6 engine (385 HP in 2001 - 405 starting with MY2002)
The 2001 Z06 did not have HUD on it, standard starting with MY2002
Re: What does Z06 stand for? Does anyone know? (BlackZ06)
Gee excuse me for using option instead of order or order instead of option. Believe me its no big deal, the point was to answer someone's question and not worry about minor issues.
Maybe if everyone remembered the purpose it would be okay and there would be no need to nit pik.

I certainly agree with Black Z06, if you're going to insert knowledge into the forum let's make sure it's the correct knowledge. That's how a lot of misinformation starts floating around, when people who are close but not quite correct start putting out info and others latch onto it. Good job, Black!!!
By the way, while we're talking RPOs, if anyone is interested the last time that they used the RPO of Z16 prior to the new CE Z06 was the 1996 Grand Sport. Another interesting tidbit. :flag
Re: What does Z06 stand for? Does anyone know? (Vettin Man)
I am not totally sure but I have heard before that Zora Duntov was the person used to get the Z in the high performance models. Here - http://formen.ign.com/news/23542.html
Re: What does Z06 stand for? Does anyone know? (SirRaleigh)
I doubt he was the basis for the Z. The Z's were used by other cars in the Chevy lineup (like the 67 Camaro RPO Z28 which became the Z28 model later on) and probably were used before the 63 Stingray was produced.

:iagree: I also doubt that Zora's initial had anything to do with it. I do not remember anything in Zora's biography supporting that theory. RPOs started in 1963. Prior years just had a numberic code sometimes with a single letter.
Also the Z is not nor has it ever been restricted to performance items. Approximately 1/2 of the time it has been used for such items as a trailer package (ZN1), convenience and comfort group (Z01), etc.
Z07 was used in 1973 for the off-road suspension and braking package.
The Z codes have been reused such as Z07 again in 1991 for adjustable suspension package and ZR1 was used for the LT1 engine in 1970 prior to it being reissued for "The King of the Hill" ZR1 in 1990.
