Not to put a damper on the automatic bashing ('cus I mostly agree), but what if someone who were disabled wanted a Z and couldn't physically use a manual? You could say they should get a A4 coupe and just mod it to get the extra power, but that's not the same as owning a Z06. They should be able to enjoy the Z too  .
Check out the current issue of Corvette Magazine. There's an '01 Z06 that runs in the 9s with a 4L60 in it (heavily modified, of course). He's NHRA certified down to 7.50 with all the safety stuff. Not there yet, but the car is also street legal.
You guys are mistaken to think that an auto Z06 would'nt be a potent combination. I think the guys that have stepped thiers up with any modifications can attest to that. These cars can be a real handful trying to keep hooked up & shift at the same time.

That's what makes it more fun/interesting, in my opinion. I'd rather buy an A4 C5 and mod it than do a conversion on my Z. My car is currently being worked on and the end result will be north of 650 rwhp. Even with this much power I haven't considered for one moment a conversion although, as was pointed out, the car would benefit from it. I know it won't be a consistent bracket car but that's a small percentage of racing that I participate in. In the end, I think it's a personal preference. What I may consider fun to drive may not necessarily appeal to anther driver.
IF its a road-race car, then the stick is better...and the Z06 was designed as a factory road racer. :)
But anything over 500rwhp will be quicker and more reliable with an auto. Period. It's easier on parts. Once you step up way out there (650+rwhp) you will have a hard time finding a clutch/6-speed tranny that will be durable...if you drag race a lot. If you're just blowing the tires off driving around town and commuting, then you're fine. But throw on some sticky tires (slicks) and dump the clutch at high rpms to get good 60' and 1/4 ETs and you will be spitting out parts much more often with a stick trans vs. an auto.
So depending on what the intended purpose is, the auto makes a lot of sense.
Should you just buy a C5 hardtop and forego the extra expense of a Z06? Maybe. But you can't buy a new C5 hardtop.
I just know my ETs would drop 1/2 a second with an auto. An automatic trans is a turbos best friend. :D
When I ordered my Z06, one of my biggest fears was the 6-speed manual transmission. From way back when, I developed the impression that Chevy high-performance clutches took a lot of leg power to operate. In Houston's rush-hour traffic, I was sure that it would be a death sentence for me.
When I got my bullet, I was totally amazed at two things: (1) how little effort the clutch took and (2) how incredibly different the Z06 6-speed is from the 1998 automatic coupe that I drove to try out a Corvette. A Corvette with a manual transmission is, put simply, a completely different car... not at all like an automatic.
I suspect that, in the near future, Corvettes will go to the manual sequential auto-shift gear boxes with the paddle or button shifters (a la Ferarri). To me, that would be super cool.

Re: Automatic Z06 (pnielsen)
Which is worse?
An automatic Z06 or a coupe with Z06 badges??????
A coupe with Z06 badges is worse.
TRR
That really depends. Assuming the Coupe is stick shift and modded to Z06 standards (405HP etc.), I have to say the auto Z06 is worse...
I would like to see all the Automatic Z06 bashers in person so I can tell them to grab a Lane Heads UP !:D  If any of You guys are ever in Chicago look me up . :D  :seeya
Given the same gear ratios the automatic car will run faster quarter times. Not as much fun on the street and not as fast on road course but quicker e.t's.
Auto's with a shift kit and a download, plus a performance rear are the way to go.Doesn't take much to get that extra 50 hp.like you guys keep saying"up in smoke in the real world"Gotta get the hook up,if you don't wannna get shook up! Takes about 2 grand to turn an auto into a a zo6 fast car.and the tires last longer too. :jester
