I installed a 160 thermostat a while back when the temperatures were cooler and it was runing about 170-180 on the highway and about 200 around town. The other day the weather was tipycal for sunny South Florida and my coolant temperature went to 228 while in traffic and it usually stays around 210-220 while in traffic mostly.
I thought the thermostat was going to take care of this type of things is obvious that a car going at highway speeds will run cooler is the low speeds that matter to me.
Am I overheating?
It is my understanding that you just can't switch out the thermostat and expect to automatically have lower temps when sitting in traffic. The fans must be programmed to cycle on at lower temps as well.
I recently had a 160 installed in my car and had the fan set points changed. I got stuck in traffic 2 weekends ago (it was actually about 60 degrees out, not warm, but certaily not cold) and my water temp hovered around 178 for the 30 minutes that it took for me to clear the jam. :)
This is typically done with LS1 edit. My car was in at tuner's shop for the thermostat replacement and some other things. I also had the LS1 Edit done for tuning purposes. In the process of the tune, there are many parameters which can be modified (ie- CAGS defeat) and the fan set points were adjusted. Don't ask me where they are set to come on. I left that in the hands of Chris (at ECS).
I noticed that my Y2K car was running warmer last week (our first warm days). Anyway made a mental note to clean out the air in-take plenum. Saturday I did and pulled a small plastic bag and several hand fulls of twigs, leaves and dead bugs from the intake. I took a strong flash light and could see that even though I had remove the big stuff, the air conditioning radiator face was still full of bug bodies. So took the air cleaner off, and dismanteled the shroud area and pressure washed the radiators then used compressed air. Got a lot of junk out of the fins.
The result is that the car is running about at about 205 insteadof 220 in traffic!
You have to realize that all a thermostat does is allow coolant to flow through the engine once a certain temperature is reached. Sitting in traffic, if there's not enough heat being transferred away from the radiator, the temp is going to climb regardless of the thermostat-- because the thermostat is already open anyway.
I thought 228 was a too much for this car or at least close to the limit. What is limit temp for our cars?
I like it under 200 preferably 170-180. I say this because I had a 454 dually a while back that liked to run hot and after installing two black magic electric fans it would run 180 all the time regardless of outside temps.
I will check the radiator again this weekend. thanks
