I don't know if this has been discussed or not, but I got word today from my buddy who's the gm at my local Chevy store, that GM will be replacing the shift forks in manual C5's. I don't know if all C5's are covered, but my '03 is. He said we should be receiving notification fairly soon.
I heard we were getting a recall for sure on the lock up on the steering wheel.. this can happen while your driving your 6 speed.
Hey anybody ever had a problem with first gear? mine is still real tight and it pops out sometimes at the red light if i dont get it all the way there. i mean its tighter than the 02 Z was.. is this normal?? hate to take it in for that..
still at 650 miles, its loosened up some but not all the way
lets say i stop at a redlight. i put the car in first gear with the clutch fulling engaged.. its hard sometimes to get up into first gear.. not all the time but sometimes .. and then when i go to take off.. it pops out of first gear.. i do baby my cars alot.. but the car is completely stopped and i fully engage the clutch to put into first or any gear..
I haven't had that problem with my Z, but my previous 93 vette did that sometimes.
When you're stopped, the gears and synchros in the tranny aren't moving when you have the clutch in. Sometimes the gear teeth are lined up so that they try to engage tip-to-tip and the gears don't mesh. Generally you just have to get things spinning briefly and it'll slide right into gear.
Example, put the stick in neutral, let the clutch out, then depress the clutch and shift into first. Or shift into 2nd then 1st without letting out the clutch.
Mine is a pain to get into reverse with the hurst shifter-- sometimes it feels like it goes in, but if I let the clutch up it just grinds. I've learned to feather the clutch to "test" it before any grinding occurs, but passengers think I'm odd.
Tony, Fork is attached to throwout bearing. :steering:
I don't think so, the forks he's talking about are internal to the transmission and move the gears back and forth. I bent one on a 4 to 5 shift, and got my tranny replaced under warranty. Rebuilders are using Viper internals to make the trannys stronger, the main difference is a stronger fork.
Thanks Thud.. so should i stick it out.. no pun intended..lol
or should i take "her" in to get checked out..
probally happened about 6 times in the 650 miles.. i have gone thru the gears .. meaning like the break in said to the 500 mile mark. i thought it would loosen like the 02 Z did. but i never had this in the other car, just a tight tight shifter right now.. at redlight i get where i put it in netural and then i go to first.. maybe im trying to quick..
I've had stick shifts before, but not in many years have i driven one everyday.. thanks again.. Tony
Tony, it's possible too that your shift linkage may need adjusting for 1st gear. Either way, it should be covered under warranty(and the shift forks are internal in the transmission, when you shift, you are actually moving the forks which move the gears) :auto:

:iagree: Tony, it sounds like batmobile hit it, the linkage is probably off just a little. I've heard about the recall for the steering lock but not the forks. Maybe they will do both repairs at once?

If the gears do not line up where the car will easily go all the way into first gear, put the car into second gear first, and then go to first gear.
This always works for me. :seeya
My 04 Z06 with 620 miles has popped out of 1st from a start twice, seems I did not get it all the way into 1st even though it felt it was.
Ditto (04 Z06, 400 miles). It happened twice the same day for me while doing some really slow driving in the neigborhood.
Admittedly I might have done some sloppy shifting and maybe I just didn't get it all the way into 1st... Or, more likely, it could be related to the fact that in both cases this happened during unusually slow acceleration and keeping it in 1st for a long time (due to the slow driving).
Haven't seen it again though, but again, this may just be because in normal driving I don't keep it in 1st for a long time :D
Now that hear other people mention this, I'm inclined to account these incidents to a flaw with the transmission than to sloppy shifting...
If this is a recall that is true then doesn't that mean they have to drop the rear and take out the transmission to do this? I really don't want my dealership doing this as they always seem to scratch or mess something else up in the process of fixing things. And with this big a job they most certainly will scratch my car.
