[Z06] Possible Recall
I've noticed that when I pay special attention to pushing the lever past the point of resistance that's about halfway between neutral and first, I don't have any problem. But if I don't push it "home" past that point, it will pop back to neutral. I just thought it was a characteristic of the Z06 gearbox; I've never had a similar problem in the other 25 or so cars I've owned.
I guess I'll have to find a dealer other than the one who sold me the car to look at it.

I don't think so, the forks he's talking about are internal to the transmission and move the gears back and forth. I bent one on a 4 to 5 shift, and got my tranny replaced under warranty. Rebuilders are using Viper internals to make the trannys stronger, the main difference is a stronger fork.
The early vette shift forks are aluminum..( 1997-2003??).
The 03 cobra and the viper both come with iron shift forks...that are much more durable.
This Iron shift fork has been adapted to the vette trans as of late.
The dealers have been replacing ALOT of these... several per week I was told... I know because mine has been in on 3 seperate occasions for this repair.. the first two times, it was fixed with the stock aluminum part. On the 3rd go round the fork was replaced with the new "revised" iron shift fork.
I have seen on this forum, somewhere the TSB # and the actual part number of the new iron shift fork. You willjust have to do a search...
I can feel a definate difference in my trans now.. much more firm, positive shifts..I have been a few hundred miles on the iron fork..and i dont look for there to be another problem..
Symtoms of damaged shift forks include, the trans sticking in gear.. popping out of gear.. and gear grind.. but it can pretty much cause the trans do do all sorts of weird things..
a minor break might in some cases feal like a "two stage gear engagement"... instead of the normal feel of the synchos hiting, synchonizing then falling into gear, it might suddenly feel like there are 2 notches the shifter must pass upon engaging into a gear...
There is a technical service bulletin about this.. it is possible the recall might extend to cars that have so far run out of miles or time on their factory warranty.
The new iron fork is supposedly stock.. in the 2004 cars.
hope this helps... if any of you are near Tom Jumper Chevy, in Atlanta Ga., give them a call..... they have done many of these replacements.. and are awesome guys...
