If this is a recall that is true then doesn't that mean they have to drop the rear and take out the transmission to do this? I really don't want my dealership doing this as they always seem to scratch or mess something else up in the process of fixing things. And with this big a job they most certainly will scratch my car.

I have 400 miles on my 04 and have'nt noticed this problem. Sometimes I'm in 3rd when I think I am starting out in 1st, but I've just become more attentive to that.

Mine has "popped out" several times as well, but I thought it was just my getting used to a shift gate on the Z06 that is a mile long compared to the S2000 I used to own. (Neutral to first on the Z06 is literally as long as first-second on the S2000.)

I've noticed that when I pay special attention to pushing the lever past the point of resistance that's about halfway between neutral and first, I don't have any problem. But if I don't push it "home" past that point, it will pop back to neutral. I just thought it was a characteristic of the Z06 gearbox; I've never had a similar problem in the other 25 or so cars I've owned.

I guess I'll have to find a dealer other than the one who sold me the car to look at it.

I had forks replaced under warranty in my 01Z. I doubt you'll ever see a recall. It's too expensive and necessitates special tools. My dealer had to send me to another chevy dealer that had the special tools to undo the rear axle assembly.

If your trans is poping out of gear, your shift linkage could be out of adjustment or you could have internal transmission problems. I highly recommend taking it in and getting it fixed. Hope like hell its under warrenty!

My 02 Z has the 1st gear issue where is difficult to get into to 1st at a stop light. Happens maybe 10% of the time in 1st. I've never had it pop out of gear. At any rate, I finally got sick of if it and took it in. Dealer essential said that it was a design flaw, and some Zs are worse than other. He also said that aftermarket (short throw) shifters seem to exacerbate the situation as you have less leverage when trying to get in first with the gears in tranny aren't perfectly lined up.

Never had my '30 pop out of first while sitting at a light. The trouble I do have is the it won't go into reverse after sitting. I have to put it into 1st then it will go into rev! Anyone else experience this?

Tony, Fork is attached to throwout bearing. :steering:

I don't think so, the forks he's talking about are internal to the transmission and move the gears back and forth. I bent one on a 4 to 5 shift, and got my tranny replaced under warranty. Rebuilders are using Viper internals to make the trannys stronger, the main difference is a stronger fork.

joey actually, the fork that he was talkign about is the aluminum shift fork. it is what the shifter is basically attached to via a rod. The shift fork controls and fits around the slider, inside your transmission.

The early vette shift forks are aluminum..( 1997-2003??).
The 03 cobra and the viper both come with iron shift forks...that are much more durable.
This Iron shift fork has been adapted to the vette trans as of late.

The dealers have been replacing ALOT of these... several per week I was told... I know because mine has been in on 3 seperate occasions for this repair.. the first two times, it was fixed with the stock aluminum part. On the 3rd go round the fork was replaced with the new "revised" iron shift fork.
I have seen on this forum, somewhere the TSB # and the actual part number of the new iron shift fork. You willjust have to do a search...

I can feel a definate difference in my trans now.. much more firm, positive shifts..I have been a few hundred miles on the iron fork..and i dont look for there to be another problem..

Symtoms of damaged shift forks include, the trans sticking in gear.. popping out of gear.. and gear grind.. but it can pretty much cause the trans do do all sorts of weird things..
a minor break might in some cases feal like a "two stage gear engagement"... instead of the normal feel of the synchos hiting, synchonizing then falling into gear, it might suddenly feel like there are 2 notches the shifter must pass upon engaging into a gear...

There is a technical service bulletin about this.. it is possible the recall might extend to cars that have so far run out of miles or time on their factory warranty.

The new iron fork is supposedly stock.. in the 2004 cars.

hope this helps... if any of you are near Tom Jumper Chevy, in Atlanta Ga., give them a call..... they have done many of these replacements.. and are awesome guys...
