I'm looking at a Z06 on the dealer's lot that is new with 13 miles on it. It is #13,XXX indicating a build date in Nov.'03. Are there any issues with the first part of the year that any one knows about? There are usually continuing quality enhancements during the production year, but I don't want to be stuck with something that I could have avoided.
The only problem I am aware of was the paint not sticking to the carbon fiber hoods on the Z16 models only. Other than that I think 04 is a fairly trouble free year.
One issue, is the HUD and windshield. Some 04's and 03's had imperfect windshields. You can test for this, by sitting in the car and turning the HUD on. Check to be sure that the HUD is in focus. Otherwise it could be a windshield replacement issue to correct.
I have not had any mechanical or cosmetic problems so far. The vehicle is handling just like I envisioned it would. I plan on driving it more to analyze its performance characteristics, etc.
Re: Any issues with early '04 models??? (2002c5blackcoupe)
I just bought a Nov. 03 production Z06. I can not really tell if my HUD is out of focus or if it is my vision. Anyone know exactly which cars got the imperfect windshields?
Re: Any issues with early '04 models??? (vettethret)
I've got a October 2003 '04 Z06, the only problem I had was the boot on the rear left axel had a cut in it from the factory. It was slinging grease on the inside of the wheel, had the boot replaced under warranty, no problems so far.
After driving my '04 Z06 home, I noticed that the antenna was loose, so I tightened it.
Also, just in front of the right rear wheel, there was a body panel screw that was loose and could not be tightened (stripped threads). I brought the car in and they put a new insert and bolt and it has been fine since. Now 8+K miles on it.
The dipstick popped out a few times, so I had the mechanics check for possible causes. they found nothing and just crimped the top of the tube for a tighter fit. No problem since.
Did my first oil change 2 weeks ago at close to 8K miles (oil life at 9%) and I never needed to add any oil to the engine. My previous car (Trans Am WS6) would consume a Liter every 2K miles. It is nice to have a car that does not consume oil again.
Within the first 1000 miles I wasn't sure what was the problem with a sudden power loss when changing gears under hard acceleration, but later understood it was the traction control kicking in. Duh ! Probably a rear tire saver in my case.
I have a squeak but I know where it comes from : The glove box door. But it isn't too annoying.
Another squeak from the steering column. When it occurs, I pound the bottom of the steering wheel a few times, and it goes away for about 1000 miles.
I put a Stinger exhaust and love the sound, but had to add a partition to avoid inside resonance. No more resonance, and a great sounding car.
I had put an aftermarket air intake and the mass airflow sensor would no longer properly meter the air. Although this could have been corrected by compensating the LTFT (Long-Term Fuel Trims) with some re-programming, I decide to leave the computer stock and put back on the original air filter.
I have been scraping the bottom of the front air dam on dip/bumps. I don't know why some want to lower this car any more than it is. For me this is already too low.
The rear trunk lid stopped popping fully after about 5K miles. I sprayed silicon lubricant inside the lock mechanism and it has been fine since.
That's what comes to mind. All minor stuff I think. Overall I would say that this has been a car with low amount of worries. Still very happy with it.
Now give me an open road and no police so I get to see some high triple digits on the HUD.
