The problem with corvette stereos is not the speakers - its the head unit. I had hooked up my old sony DAT to my 87, and even with the stock speakers, it sounded incredible.
GM needs to completely shut down whatever excuse of a radio division they have and supply decent heads for their cars.
I don't know about the C5 systems, but with the C4s, the bose speakers had powered amps that wore out after a few years. If the amps are gone in the C5s, you will get a tremendous improvement with a new head. You can still replace just the head if they are amplified, but you need some goofy adapter to interface the head with the Bose amps.
good luck

I took out the stock z stereo and door speakers and put in diamond audio component speakers 61/2'',3'',1'' in each door in front and 61/2'' 1''in rear with 4 8''rockford fosgate subs and for a car that challenges sound reproduction it sounds awsome. 8'' speakers really should be in a box, im not sure how those are set up but I know that some dynamat or other sound deadening material in the doors will help sound quality. I did one door and couldnt believe the sound difference ,the door without dynamat you couldnt hardly hear the bass and midrange the door even sounded better when you closed it not so hollow. It is heavy though so use it sparingly if weight is a concern, I just put 3 2''x12'' strips in.
Focal all the way.. i have the K2P's in the front and M B Quarts in the rear with a mtx 9500 to top it off.. thats if you want to get crazy with it. but if you want you can just put an amp on your oe speakers to make them sound alot diffrent and possibly add some subs in the rear.. :troll
So overall it sounds like the stock subs are useless.
SQEZN BI,
When you put the three speekers up front did you take out the 8's that are in the door and use that space for your 6.5"???

two speakers go up front on each side. one hi and one mid.. subs go in the back.. and some kind of speaker goes in the back like some coaxles or something.. i put another set of door speakers in the back though.. thats only if you want to go all out.. good luck on the new system
Dynaudio makes a 7" Midbass and 1" Tweeter combo that works great in the C5. The bigger woofers bring the soundstage forward in the car. They even make an 8" component set, but they sound a little too muddy to me.
I ran the following in my old coupe"
Eclipse HU
Dyn MkII Components
Stock Rear Bose (Turned nearly off)
Jl Audio 10W6 in Center
Fosgate 5 Channel G600a5

The stock system all together is garbage in the C5. If you're looking for the best component speakers its either the Diamond Hex Series, Focal Utopias, MB Quarts, or the JBL GTI series. You can and I have ran over a 1000 watts to all of these components with the sound being incredible. Its not power that makes a speaker sound horrible its distortion so go with a nice head unit, run it to any clean amp and enjoy.
