Hi everyone, I am from the C3 forum, (have a 78) anyways, I have a pretty good line in a really nice 2002 with 16k on it. Its like a magenta red with tan int. 6 speed trans, very good looking car. Anyways, when you shut down the engine, there is a rattle noise from under the center of the car, are these cars prone to exhaust problems, I have heard of the rear end issue, but I dont really know anything about the c5 at all, other than its fast as stink. So any info on this car would be great, I am BMW tech by day so handling maintence and upkeep isnt a problem, but I just wanted to know things i should look at specificially before i go ahead and purchase this car.

That noise is normal if you don't hold the clutch in. Its my understanding that its the driveshaft whipping around during spin-down. Do a search on "marbles in a can" and you might get some hits. The video that comes with the C5 specifically mentions this noise.
The problem is, if you buy a C5 you may never be seen inside the house again. Sleep, eat and live in the garage until you can put her on the road again. The noise you are hearing is built into the C5, some get it out with exaust mods others do not. Buy the car and be cursed with MOD addiction like the rest of us fools.

Could very well be the transmission - especially if it sounds like marbles in a can rattling around. If it doesn't sound like that, then you should get it on a lift and see if you can notice anything else. Good luck on the purchase. Sounds like a nice car.
Kind of alarmed me the first time I heard it, and was skeptical when the tech told me that it was normal. But, after a couple days here on this forum I was also saying "what noise" That is why I love this place
Anyway, buy it, you will love it. BTW, that's the best color combo available
