I have a few questions. First, how many of you are driving your car in 3rd the majority of the time? Second, what is a normal temperature for transmission? Third, how does running in third effect the temperature?
I think that does it for now, I am sure I will have more questions.
Around town, I leave the tranny in 3rd for better response. On the highway, I'm generally in third gear on the onramp and shift into 4th after merging with traffic and leave it there. Hope this helps. Don't know about the other questions. I'm sure others will respond.

I do exactly the same thing. Use 3rd for city driving, then 4th on the interstate or highways. I have never had any temperature issues and the car seems to run normal at all times.

Same as above. I put it in 4th (OD) and let the tranny make the decisions. I think my tranny runs around 200 degrees or so, but I don't really check it.
This conceot used to drive me , a while back. I guess if you drive it in 3 you get more responsiveness, however, I didn't like the hardness of the shifting on the deceleration, so I just keep it in 4, unless a ricer pullz around and wants his azz handed to him
Ours A-4 is a daily driver so my wife just leaves it in fourth and runs. Me though, I like to down shift to 2nd and run the hell out of it. what a great car. enjoy!

I leave mine in 4/OD most of the time, unless I'm planning on doing some running, in which case I'll select 3 most of the time. Since most automatics are so light duty these days, I prefer to let it do its' own job and preserve its' own ***. That philosophy goes back to a bad transmission experience in the eighties!
After 20 miles of driving, I'm generally around 150 degrees.
I use third till i get up around 60-65 mph then go on up to Overdrive. At full operating temps, @ 2000 to 2500 ppm i run at 192 If i am getting on it, temps can run as high as 205

1st gear stays in 1st.
2nd starts 2nd and stays in 2nd.
3rd gear starts in 1st and will shift to 2nd and 3rd or back down.
4th gear does the obvious.
It's in the manual and obvious when in use.

I agree. Second gear is similar to a snow start gear, allowing for less torque, thus less wheel spin in slippery conditions.
As for temperture, mine runs between 192-208, depending on outside ambient temperatures.
Trans temperature should rise a bit if kept in 2nd or 3rd gear while traveling around town due to higher line pressure in the trans. It should not hurt the trans.
