2004 coupe.

Gasoline Octane.

Owners manual
Page 5-4

Use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane of 91 or higher for best performance. You may also use middle grade or regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but your vehicles acceleration may be slightly reduced.

I here allot of folks say their OM's say something different. ????

I use 87 and I get ~29.5 MPG
With higher octane the MPG drops to ~26

Anything more that 87 (not the Z or the mod squad folks) is a waste of money ... not necessary.

Car goes like a bat out of hell already so what's the big rip.

However, this is an emotional issue for the owner ... not the car.

93 (Super) From BP - 91 is readily available, and I know what it says in the OM but..... My feelings would be hurt if my vette forced me to drink Boones Farm rather than Kendall Jackson

someone ....anyone
correct me if im wrong
higher octanes withstand pressure and heat better than lower octanes thus allowing them to withstand higher compression without detonating before the spark

how then could anyone ever get worse gas milage by using higher octane?

the only thing higher octane will do is ensure the gasoline combusts at exactly the right time

that being said

i only use sunco 94

i had the gas gauge problem when i first bought it cause the sales man stopped at kmart to put gas in

after i bought it i ran a bottle off techron and switched to sunoco 94

i look at it this way....i could either buy 94 instead of 92 or have a 20 min phone call using 10-10-220

ill stick with the 94

Around here it goes 83 - 87 - 93 so I don't have much choice. I always use the highest available. Saving a few pennies a gallon isn't worth it to me.

Not true at all. The electronics detune the engine a bit to compensate so the 87 goes bang at "just the right time too"

I started a thread awhile back on this subject and some very knowledgeable folks pinged in on it. Can't find it since the forum switch. My airplane likes 87 too ... much better than 100LL.

Give it a try before your next fill. Just put 5 gallons of the "cheap" stuff in it and monitor the MPG on the DIC. Mash the pedal to the floor and if it doesn't snap your head back, even with the "cheap" stuff then your machine needs a doctor cause it is sick.

Then count your good fortune and buy BEER!

I also run 91... Cant find any places in San Diego with 93. And ever since my bad sputtering incident at the track, I run Chevron or Shell.

I run Regular 87 octane in the winter, Mid-grade 89 octane in the summer. It works fine and it DOES give better MPG. AND I buy the cheap stuff too. But too, I drive the car EVERY day, 82K+ so far. My momma didn't raise me to throw money down the filler neck. You skeptics ought to give it a try, keep records, do it scientifically, I do. I did find out that you do NOT want to run 87 octane in the summer when it is 100deg outside, that will NOT work.

I used to put only premium (either 91 or 92 octane) in the car, but I have been recently putting 89 in it. Car runs fine, no pinging and I still get very good gas mileage.

I wish I knew the answer, but I've seen the results first hand. Around the southeast, I always use 93 octane, preferably Amoco/BP. The best mpg I get with my A4 is 28, maybe 28.something, as noted on the "average mgp" dic page, never hitting the reset button so it does it over several hundred miles.

When I drove to Las Vegas a month ago, I couldn't find anything better than 91 octane between Oklahoma City and Vegas. The elevation was increasing, and it was a climate with less humidity. I was getting 32 mpg on 91 octane gas as noted on the average mpg dic page. Something was different. I wish I knew the whole story.
