I have read the threads and heard loud and clear to buy the column lock bypass. Just for laughs I sent an e-mail with my VIN to GM to ask about the problem and recall info.
The reply -- the column lock issues applies to certain C5's only and 2003 year vehicles do not have a problem.
Could you post the address that you e-mailed to, I think we could underwhelm them. It would be an interesting endeavor wouldn't it. If we could get it in writing and if it ever happened to us we would have something to go back on them with. They should at least pay the bill if it ever does happen and leave us stranded. My .02

To the General I have but one reply the 03 have the problem and this 03 has the CLB. There is no fix for it just bandaid from the General. This column lock is a problem on Vettes of the C5 vintage, is now, has been, always will be. Trust the General, be ready for a flat bed ride when it gets you.

I got towed Thursday for the column lock problem. I have a 1998 C5 and the problem got me on the back of a wrecker, with a short ride to the Chevy dealership. The car would still crank and move back and forth, however the column stayed locked and you could not steer it.
Yeah we need to make a new thread with a poll, and list who has had it and what year. Two polls for M6's and A4's. I'd be curious to see how many 03 and 04's have had problems.

Maybe ask for no postings just poll results. We have 60k members here and it would be interesting to see how many vote. But if there are to many posts it gets out of hand. I think.

2003, A4s do not have the problem, they have no column lock; that's how GM cured the problem on A4s.

Naw no problems. Go to the Poll and click on the applicable category. It does not proliferate any postings the poll is just one post . . . just come back in a few days and look it up for results

Its my understanding that all 6-speeds can develop this problem. Personally, I would recommend getting the CLB and not having to worry about it. Hopefully some '03 owners will give you some feedback.

Is this true or false?
Everyone...repeat after me....IF YOU HAVE A SIX-SPEED YOU WILL HAVE YOUR COLUMN LOCK UP SOONER OR LATER. GET THE CLB AND BE DONE WITH IT.
If you believe what GM tells you then I have some beachfront property in Louisiana I'll sell ya

That is correct The transmission has a lock in Park that is released when you apply the brakes so there is no need to lock the steering column. end of story
