outside temp. today exceeded 90 this afternoon..oil temp. showed more than 240, exactly 247..i am known to believe 220 is normal temp. where mine should run..driven for about 30 minutes in stop & go traffic..any suggestions or recommendations..
That is a tad warm, my brother. In those same ambient temps here in Danville, I won't go over 205 after 20 miles of driving. How's the engine temp? Got junk blocking the radiator?
have you flushed the systeme recently?
the same happen to me after I had the system flushed.
it has since bocme normal. the mechnic thinks it could have been an air bubble. I also had the thermosthat changed to a low temp model. will buy a hypertech unit to have the fans com on at about 185 instead of the 230 it is set up for.

Not really that high. Oil typically runs hotter than coolant. Mobil-1 is good for over 375*.
thanks for you guys inputs, first of all..
about her, briefly..
1. 2004 mn6 with 5500 miles..meaning she is fairly new..hopely, i don't have to do system flushing as pwr 50x mentioned..
2. installed 170 thermostat..noticing slow temp. rising, but it still gets hotter..very aware of that without fan temp. set-up, it does not really help things..so, got 2004 predator, but since mine is equipped with earlier version of pcm program, i will have to send the unit back to diable for update..
3. coolant runs below oil temp..virtually always..oil level is a touch above top mark, and fresh..
4. engine parts seem good..i don't hear any unusual sound and/or something..
5. have blackwing & borla stinger installed..any chance they cause such high temp?..
as soon as i get the predator back, i will set the fan temp. way down, something like 175 for both fans, and spend some time for observation..anyone can think of other possibilities?
Your car should not run that high temp on oil. The sensors could have taken a tun for the worse. Since it is a new one have the Generals motor monkeys check it out, just watch them.

My oil temp also gets that high (230 - 245) after 30+ minutes of stop and go
traffic. I think it's normal for these cars. It cools down pretty quick once you
get out of stop and go traffic.
Those are normal oil temps under those circumstances, no need to worry. On the track, where for 20 minutes there are frequent wide open throttle intervals, I start seeing 280s before I let up, and many Z06 drivers bring it up to 300. More than that and you need an oil cooler.
These engines run hot. There is no "normal" temp for a set of conditions, it depends on how you drive. When I am laying back here in Memphis (spelled HOT), the oil temp is in the low 220s. If I drive more aggressively, it gets into the 240s or even 250, but comes down pretty quickly when I bring the RPMs down. It all depends on our right foot and RPMs. A better intake and exhaust will modestly increase the power and heat.
Well, those temps would worry me. Mine NEVER gets above about 218 -- 220 regardless of how I drive. In fact I had it a bit above 140MPH about a week ago and checked the gages right after and it was running at about 220. (I don't usually drive it that fast -- I had just had wheels and tires installed and wanted to make sure they were well balanced. )
I have a Hypertech, and have the fans set at the "optimized for stock" settings. This means fan #1 comes on at 208 coolant temp. And that's all it takes -- the coolant never gets above 210!
I have Stingers and an X-pipe, as well as a Vortech, bridge, coupler, and descreened MAF.
It seems that there is quite a spread of temps that are considered normal.

Well, that's interesting and there may be some car to car variability, however, in your 140 mph run, how long were you at WOT ? If it was only 20-30 secs, that will generate anywhere near as much heat as running 4-6K rpms with lots of WOT for 20 minutes. What happens if you run WOT, brakes, WOT, brakes, for 10-20 mins using lots of low gears ?
250 degrees is not bad. anything over 260 and one should drive slower to cool the car down.
We spend a lot of time on the track at WOT and many vettes get oil temps well over 260 degrees. The hardest are vettes with low gears like 4.10 - they get oil temps in the mid 300s. The advice given is to slow down and let the oil cool to under 250 degrees.
Some of us have installed oil coolers to keep the temp under 250 degrees and have gone too a heavyer weight oil. I use 15 w 50 and change it every two track weekends. That is about every 6 weeks or about 800 miles.
I dont care what the 'oil gods' say about how long the synthetic oil can last or what temp it can take. I see it as cheap insureance.
I think someone mentioned about checking the oil levels. You may wish to also add an extra 1/2 quart, this will not hurt the engine, but may help it.
Stop and go daily driving is hard on any car.
Good luck

Well Spiral Bri, I never track my car so, no, I don't drive it as you mention -- and I'm sure my oil temps would get higher if I did. However, he suggested that his temps got that high just from driving in traffic for 30 minutes on a 90 degree day. I don't think he would have been going WOT over and over! Mine simply does not run that hot from driving in traffic, or other relatively normal driving.

I would be a little concerned about the temp being that high. You may want to do a little investigating like mentioned above and see if anything stands out.
thanks for the helpful recommendation..
it seems like optimal (?) oil temp. varies from one person to another..i am more biased to hotter side, i guess..since the purchase of my vert, i have experienced several operating conditions, from stop & go to track..i once experienced close to 290 on track, but never had over 240 in normal (stop & go) traffic..and that kinda bothers me..
i like to hear some more from drivers who installed oil cooler and/or other devices, which help the temp. down..any recommendations?
