I'm thinking about purchasing Ram air intake on my 99' FRC. I've heard some rumor's that you cannot drive in the rain due to the ram air sucking in the water into your engine and it is bad for the engine. Is this true? Tell me what other bad things are about buying Ram Air Intake.
If you normally drive through foot-deep streams, then a "cold-air" system is not for you. Otherwise, rain in of itself should pose no problem at all.
By the way, the closest intake system to true-ram is the Halltech unit that directs air from a cutout in the front license plate cover, straight through to the throttle body without any filter in the way to slow it down. Of course, you wouldn't want to keep this type of system installed for very long.
I had the Vararam on my last Vetter (2000 Vertte) and there where no problems for me...even in downpours I put a HallTech Stinger on my new Vette and I can not tell much of a difference in performance (maybe 5-10hp, if that ), but there is a difference in ease of install and quality of the product.
I still have not seen a documented case of hydrolock on the Vararam, so do not be chased away from it for fear of that. However, if you want a very nice system that will take you 15 min to install instead of 2.5 hours, has a better fit and finish, and comes with a new and improved airbridge and coupler, then the Stinger is the way to go
