There is probably a thread out there about this already. My wife has a 2002 coupe and she wants to buy remote start. If there is anyone out there with this please reply. How hard is it to install and where do I buy one.

Places like Circuit City, Ultimate Electronics, etc sell them. Just be sure they have a competent technician that can do the install. You certainly don't want electronic problems later on.

As the person above stated go to a reputable place who deal with car stereos/alarms on a daily basis. You will also have to purchase a VATS key bypass module in addition to the remote start kit in order to bypass the security sensor on your key.
Last but not least, don't buy the cheapest kit you see (hell, I've seen remote start kits at Target Stores). A good unit will monitor things like over rev, over heat, repeat cranking, idle speed, etc.
I believe if you have an MN6 you won't be able to leave your car in gear for this to work. Well, I guess you could but if you tried to remote start it the car would lurch forward. This is why some places won't install these on cars with manual transmissions due to safety concerns.

yes, the VATS complicates the remote start install.

what one needs is a "neutral detect switch". Some cars already have that sensor.... some do not.
Many remote start systems will instead install a detect switch on the parking brake for manual shift cars. If the parking brake is not fully engaged, the remote start will not function.
There was a thread here not to long ago discussing C5 engines dieing at any speed, anytime. That same week my son started having the same problem with his Toyota 4Runner, which turned out to be the remote starter. The mechanic said he has removed several remote starters the last couple years for the same problem. He charged us for two hours labor, handed us the unit with a mess of wires and recommended we find a more qualified installer.
I don't remember if remote starters was mentioned in the C5 thread, but make sure you have it installed by someone qualified.
Thanks guys,
I appreciate the info and I will be sure to look into all the cautions. Kinda wondering if it is worth it, but we live in Tucson AZ and getting into a nice cool car would be nice.
This is a link to just one of the many products DEI has available for remote starting. This product is also a security system so it can replace your factory key fob and give you all the same functions along with remote start. As stated above the most important variable is the installer. Unless you have experience in 12v electronics, dissasembly and reassembly of your car, and security installation I would not recommend attempting to install a remote start. Every wire in the ignition harness has to be cut and can turn into a real mess.
I recommend you talk to a few retail shops in your area and ask alot of questions. Personally I push DEI products ( I have installed over 3000 of their alarms) their products are excellent, easy to use and perform very well. Check those out at a local authorized dealer or on the web. But the product is only as good as the install.

Im not sure that the remote start is illegal here in Texas for manual speed vehicles, but I know of more than a handful of Audio stores that will not do the install on manual speed vehicles. Liability purposes is the only thing I can think of.
