Okay, I didn't lose by that much, but a loss is a loss. Actually, he kept getting the jump and I couldn't reel him in fast enough by the time we ran out of road. Anyway, I have a Blackwing, TB bypass, coupler, Superchips tune and electric cutouts. I'm looking to spend another $500.00 on a new mod or replacement mod, so I need some suggestions. What is the best bang for my $500.00 bucks? I was thinking of a new tune, or replacing the Blackwing with a TRAP or Vararam, or high flow cats, or ......
you mainly looking to roll race? like an 03 cobra?
get a shot of nitrous. Nothing greedy, just like a 75 shot should take care of most any stock blower 03 cobra, even with a pulley swap and exhaust. If you're up against a KB 03, you might need more mods for a roll race....
Wallstal might have a point. We ran 3 times and every time we ran his jump went from 2 car lengths to 1/2 a car length. I might have started in the wrong gear as well. We hit it at 40 mph and I was in 2nd gear. Anyway, improving my driving technique will help, but today's lesson is a good reason to add another mod to my Z06.
I thought of nitrous, but I don't like the idea of having a bottle taking up a good portion of my limited trunk space, but thanks for the suggestion BLU-BY-U.
That doesn't sound like a stock Cobra to me. Was it? They can be modded (under drive pulley) or the boost cranked up and you'll never know it's not stock. They will when the blow the thing up sometime down the road, but in the mean time they can easily add 30 RWHP with stealth mods.
$500 does not buy anything of impact for a vette (except for NOS) ... but you could get a set of used long tube headers, or a cam, or even used 3:90 gears....but would have to install yourself (?)....
In ZO6 4500-5000rpm is a pretty good rpm to roll punch from...above 5500 you probably hit rev limiter, below 4000 it will bog a bit.
I agree w/ AFVETTE. first off, stock, the car is very impressive. Then you can go down on the pulley sizes and up the boost on those things and they will flat out rip, but remain stock in appearance. once the Cobras start to mod, they can go really fast w/ minimal amounts of money. my one buddy has one and i know from experience. good luck, but dont get all worried if you go down to one of these things..there r alot of fast ones out there.
Need more power, OK sounds like youv'e got a good start so what about some different ratio roller rockers? The 1.77 from Vinci highperformaance will perk your ride up and the price is in the ballpark. The blackwing is one of the best cold air intakes on the market, they do offer a ram air cover for the blackwing made of carbon fiber, it's a nice addition. When I started to modify my car I tried to follow the steps that helped performance both for torque and HP with more of a lean to the low end torq. HP is a fine thing but torque is at the rpm's you drive 95% of the time.
Did this Cobra have some mods? I would assume so. The Cobra weights about 600 more lbs then your car and has about 15hp less. I don't see what advantage he had unless it was mods.

It had to be a modified Cobra. Everything being equal I wouldn't think a stock Cobra could beat a stock Z06.
No way a stock Cobra takes a Z06 - and with your mods, well, he was a sleeper, dude.
I lined up next to a cobra at the track, got stuck racing him 4 times. We were both stock. I beat him 3 times. Ok, the first run I stalled and ran a 22.71. The Cobra never ran better than 12.8.
Of course for about $500, he would wipe me out. The guy you raced was not stock...
PS..The track is for racing, not the streeet.
save your $500 bucks. doing minor mods will gain you slight increases around peak horsepower. how often does the ls6 stay at peak hp when running on a roll? it goes through it fairly quick. Invest in head work. or just a cam to wake it up.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I agree.....that Cobra was not stock. I didn't get a chance to talk to the guy afterwards, but I could tell that it wasn't stock. Nonetheless, no one likes to loose, especially to a Cobra!
Do any of you guys have a Vararam and if so, did it make a difference? The company advertises around 30-40 more hp and torque.
I am also probably going to replace the Superchips with a Predator, but I'm still bouncing that idea around.
Have a few thoughts about your run against the Cobra. If I remember correctly, you were at 40 mph in 2nd gear. I would think that being in first gear, rolling , would produce a better result than starting in 2nd.
Haven't really tried my 02 ZO6 yet, but I do know that at 30 - 35 mph in first, this thing screams when you get into it. Never seen or been around a Cobra or know that much about them. I wouldn't mine testing the Z against one. Best of luck with your next encounter.
