Default Oil Filter Magnet

Just picked up a magazine called Hot LS1 tech, on the last page they have an artical that's showing a new 1/2 round magnet that wraps around 1/2 of the oil filter, made by a company called Filtermag, have any of you guys used this type of magnet on your LS6. I think would be especialy be great for a new engine. I have been using a Magnet oil drain plug on my motto cross bike for years and couldn't beleive what it would pick up. For fifty bucks this seem like cheap insurance.
Supposed to pick up my Machine Silver Z06 this Friday.

On motorcycles, this really makes sense due to the redlines around 13-14K.

You could always just go out and buy magnets, then keep them intact around the filter by using a hose clamp. Alot cheaper, but I do agree, whatever you choose, it is certainly not a bad idea to magnetize the filter.

i have one..but, if you do oil analysis, what you will mostly find is all other metals, not steel and/or aluminum..if you see more of those metals, it is already too late..

but, as you said it is good and cheap insurance..

that's what i do, mostly because many of the metals in the engine will not stick to the magnet i hate to spend too much on one, but i still run one on all of my engines. for me its to cheap and easy to not do it

Aircraft engines have used 'magnetic chip detectors' for years. But, when the light comes on, it means 'shut the engine down NOW'. Aluminum will not be attracted to the magnets, and that is almost all the internal parts of the engine. If you have bits of the cylinder liners in the oil, it is waaaay too late to even think about. Even as cheap insurance, it is probably a waste of time and money.

The phrase "Cheap Insurance", cheaps getting thrown around lately. If a product doesn't really prevent a potential problem then, it isn't cheap insurance. It's just a waste of money.

If the oil filter needs a magnet to hold particles that would get through it's filter material then the filter is junk. Besides any particle that can get through the filter is so small it can't do any harm to the engine to begin with.

A drain plug magnet is more than enough protection.

Get a magnetic drain plug, the GM truck 5300 plug works perfect. I don't know why the truck gets a magnet and the vette doesn't?
I wouldn't mess with a filter magnet. I don't believe 100% of the oil goes through the filter at all times. The filter may get bypassed when the pressure relief blows off, especially on cold starts. There are plenty of iron/steel parts in these engines to create a little fuzz on the magnet at your first oil change. After that the magnet should stay pretty clean. Owned many Gen III engines and they all do the same little iron fuzz when new then clear right up.
