Default Locked Column

My 2000 Vert decided to lock its column overnight. Any ideas how to unlock it?

Take the key out, jerk the wheel back and forth while turning the key to the acc position. I have had mine lock up 4 times in the last week and was able to get it unlocked every time.

And people still insist on ignoring the advice of nearly every single member of CF.

Buy the GD CLB!

The lock will eventually break! In which case you can no longer jerk the wheel, nor install a CLB. Now 500 bucks, not including tow, and people laughing at your purdy car on a flatbed will fix the job. Found this out the hard way.

do a search...this has really been quite a bit lately. Once you free up your steering wheel, make sure you get a CLB installed immediately and avoid this headache again...Good luck

Seems like a rash of column locks lately. Why oh why are there C5's out there w/o a column lock by-pass??????

The tug method may un-lock it but rest assured it will lock again. As soon as you get it un-locked please buy a by-pass kit. $55 is cheap insurance.

Good luck

Tom

PS: I noticed your from the St Louis area, if you want help installing a column lock by pass I'll be glad to help.

I think we'll see posts on locked columns as long as there are new CF members and/or folks new to C5s.

It's not doing any of us any good to beat them over the head over a known problem when they ask for help just because we either knew about it before, experienced it or corrected it before they did.

Why would a new member return to this Forum for help if they got blasted for asking a totally ligitimate question or for some help from more experienced owners?

I thought the idea here was to share knowledge and experience to be of some help to fellow Corvette people not to blast people for asking basic questions.

If not, then maybe CF should start a section on "Used Questions" and move all those posts on locked columns, gas gauge problems, EMTs, born on dates, mods, build sheets, new owners and people not waving back to that area.

Wouldn't be much fun, though.

Thanks to the last few guys/ladies who posted. I'm a new C5 owner as of this past spring and just heard about the steering column by-pass last night at a club event. Not sure where to buy one yet, but it's on my A-list of things to do, as well as replacing the battery. If it bothers some people to hear the same question asked... don't reply to it. But to those of you who don't mind repeating answers and solutions to help us new owners, a special thanks.

You might want to try a "search" on this forum for CLB or steering column lock. I believe sources for them may be found in prior posts. If not you might check some of the Corvette catalogs to see if they offer them.

Good luck

PS...I see where AFVETTE offered help on this too. He would be a good source for information, too. I already had mine "fixed" so I can't say much more.

I absolutely agree in theory...nothing wrong with being a noob and asking questions....but this topic is ancient and very well discussed over the last few years.

Before I joined way back when I lurked and also am capable of using a site's SEARCH feature and still do. Usually someone, somewhere on this Forum has experienced nearly anything you might have a question about and it can be found by searching.

While lurking I read about the CLB and then SEARCHED it and lo and behold there were dozens of posts. And that was in 2001.

I had a CLB in my Vette before I joined just because I know how to read...and then act.
