Was coming back from Birmingham this morning and the oil temp got as high as 243. This seems really high to me. The coolant temp was at 205 and the tranny temp at 205 at the time this occurred and I was cruising at 75mph and the outside temp was about 92. Would wrapping the header near the oil filter and oil pan help bring down the oil temp some?
In general, the Oil Sump temperature is always 1.2 to 1.43 times higher than the coolant temp. Your's is near the lower side of this, I would not be concerned.

Seems a little high, but not excessive. Just keep an eye on it and see if it continues in that range. The headers may add a little extra heat to the oil pan.
Nothing to worry about. I see temps at almost 300 at the track and have 16k perfect miles. I usually see temps here in So Cal in the 220 to 250 range just cruising.
243 is not too bad as some have previously said. But I do have a few questions for you: How long was it at that temp? When did you last change the oil and what type of oil? And what is your oil level??

As oil gets used it heats up more, but too worry.
Oil level is full, and it was between 235 and 243 for 2 hours. The oil was changed 1300 miles ago, and currently she has Mobil1 5W30 Synthetic.
Take a look in your owner's manual - page 3-58 in the 2003 manual - section on DIC Warnings and Messages. The REDUCE ENGINE RPM warning is displayed if the oil temperature exceeds 320 degrees. So, I don't think you did any damage. You may want to start a simple log of parameters under different conditions (speeds, outside temps, etc.) to give yourself a baseline for the future, so you can look for any changes (increases) in these parameters.
Related info.... COOLANT OVER TEMP is displayed if the coolant exceeds 255 degrees. HIGH TRANS TEMP is displayed if the tranny fluid goes over 270 degrees.
I have a Vortex RamAir, Predator, 160 Thermostat, & Corsa Indys. One of the things that the Predator allows you to do is to have the fans come on earlier. One is set to come on at 165 and the other comes on at 175. On long trips (I passed thru Birmingham 7/3) the oil temp runs 207. On the track I have never seen it above 265, and that was at Bragg-Smith in 98 degree weather. If you had a supercharger you would see oil temps consistently over 300 on the track no matter what you did.
When running oil temps that high, 250 and above for extended periods of time, 20 to 30 min or more, you may want to consider putting in an oil cooler. either the intrigrated type in the radiator on a seperate cooler in front of the radiator. This will keep the oil down under 250 and help keep your engine cooler. There is a major discussion about coolers in the autocross and road racing section.
I have an oil cooler, accusump and a tranny cooler in my car. Pics in the lsig link.
50 4Ever, nice roll bar in your vert. Who did made it??
Thanks for the input from everyone. I probably won't worry about it much for the time being, but will probably do an oil cooler later on. I was kind of debating that anyway.
Also keep in mind that since Mobil 1 5w30 is on the very thin end of the 30wt range, that if you heat it up to that hot of temp, it actually thins out to being equivalent to a 5w20 oil! This is why I think M1 5w30 is not the best choice for a hard driven LS1, you're better off choosing an oil that has a viscosity of between 12-14cst at 100c. So you want an oil that is at the top end of the 30wt range, up to an oil that is a middle 40wt oil. But don't take my word for it, the best thing to do is get your oil analyzed at the end of your interval, and see how it's performing under your driving habits.

After a hard 100 + mile run today I checked my oil temp just before arriving home and temp was 218. I am now using Amsoil but I never checked my oil temp when Mobile 1 was being used.
