Default auto transmision problems

98' A4 w/50k mi. trans works fine except....no compression! down shift out of o/d and the rpm drops to idle, with car costing like it's in nuteral. Throttle up and when it matches speed it takes off? Am I looking for a new transmission already?

Anybody have this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

No, but I DO know the hard way, that driving an automatic transmission with a problem CAN lead to an expensive rebuild. If pressure isn't correct, if something's slipping, in my case, it was a $2 fastener that fell off the passing gear, a minor problem can turn to a major disaster in a heartbeat.

Call a tow truck and get it taken to a good transmission shop. A $50 wrecker bill is cheap compared with a $2,500 transmission.

It could be a problem in the valve body (4-3 valve stuck, mis-positioned checkball or damaged gaskets) which means it could be fixed without removing the transmission. It could also be the input clutch assembly in which case the transmission would have to be removed and disassembled.

These trannies need regular inspection and fluid changes. When was the last time you did that?

I've only owned the vette for two mounths, I was planning on replacing the trannie fluid just because, but I haven't yet. Everything else works perfect (ie. shifting up, downshift on acceleration, no slipping.) just compression. It happened when I passed a guy ... grab second (around 40mph) take it to five grand, let off throttle, (slow back out of warp) only the rpm dropped to idle, thought maybe the computer killed ign. or something, put it back in o/d ... drove nicely home.

if the 4-3 valve was stuck, wouldn't that cause downshift problems? I don't think the tranny has ever been touched, (checkball, gaskets?)

I think I will be taking it in for a inspection. $50 beats $2500
