Default Drilling Holes Part 2

How about some pics of how folks have drilled or cut the fog light surround when adding Z06 screens? Is there anything behind it to worry about if you just whip out the drill and have at it?

I cut a big square out of mine, there was a wire behind the right side one that you could hit, but if you know it's there it's to worry about. If you stick your hand up there, you can feel anything that might be in the way

Must be more than one that has done this... I'm planning on doing it this weekend and I don't want to screw it up.

Default holes

cut a long slot in the top , this will help direct the air upward , also cut about 1inch out of the hood weather strip at the windshild dr. side, this vents the air out.

Just curious, does this allow water in if you are driving in heavy rain?

What is behind the screens on the Z06 , are they drilled?

This is a very bad thing to do... the hood seal prevents engine vapors fromm entering the outside air intake area... at the cowl,, It is amazing how some people do somethings with every great intention, they think they are a hero for people adopting their Idea... but in reality, its the blind leading the blind... the rear hood seal is there to chanel engine vapors away from this intake and out throught the bottom of the engine bay...

Took an 1-1/8 holesaw,(the kind you use in a drill to install a deadbolt) and put one hole about an inch and a half away from the foglight. Can't even see it there . Could drill more if installing screens.

it's a stupid idea and can lead to fumes in the interior.

I'm sure that water can and does get in, but i've driven in the rain several time at speeds up to 130mph and haven't had any problems with a blackwing intake (yes i drive over 100mph in the rain)

nothing is behind the Z06 screens. GM just left that piece of plastic off, You could just take it off, but you would loose your factory fog lights

All good to know. I am in the process of finding the best deal on the screens.

don't you hate mis-information

sort of like being told to remove the screen from the intake.

I asked about this around a month ago and was rewarded with alot of replies and great discussion. I was also given a link to another thread which provided several more pages of great info. But due to the new forum format, I have no idea how to post the link to my original thread. If you feel like searching under my created threads, I'm sure you'll find it, which should answer all your questions and show you some pics of what people have done. Good luck.

Well I did it finally. Took a 1 1/4 inch wood bit (the flat shaped one) and drilled 4 holes in each side, using a slow speed electric drill. They fit with about a half inch in between. Put the screens back in and can't see a thing. I noticed a wire about 2 inches behind the passenger side surround, so, if you are really energetic with your drilling, be carefull. Nothing at all behind the driver's side. Only real problem was that some of the cut out holes fell down inside the fascia, never to be seen again (I hope).

It may or may not be a good idea to cut a small piece of the rear seal off at the extreme outer edge drivers side, but fumes???? Unless you have an exhaust leak I don't see what fumes could possibly enter the interior. I dont see any harm in this and have read many post about it and if I am not mistaken it is recommended by the author of the Halltech stinger fresh air install as well.

I used a 1" spade bit. Any bigger and you can see it from a mile away. It also keeps little and big fingers out of there.

I did the same thing, but had a lot of plastic curlings hanging. So, I cleaned up the holes with a Dremel Tool.

Me too. Except I cleaned them up with a sharp knife. Same effect. But, if you put the Z06 screens on afterwards, you can't see the holes anyway.

Yup. Me too, but just wrap your finger in sandpaper and smooth it out. This way the holes stay round. It took all of 20 minutes. Find your center line first and with a straight edge, mark it with a pencil so each hole is in line. The spade bit has the spike tip which won't wander like a drill bit will when you start the hole. And go slow so you don't damage the plastic.
