Posted this is Audio Forum with little luck, thought I'd try here too.
Hi Guys,
I have the factory changer in my 1999 C5 and it won't play CDR's. I was wondering if there is another 12 disc changer that I can buy that will fit in the same location that will play CDR's. I notice the original seems to be a Pioneer model. I'm assuming a Pioneer model won't just plug in but maybe there is an adapter? Or maybe someone has a factory changer that they know plays CDR's they are willing to sell. It seems some of them play them and some of them don't. I'm thinking that since mine plays store bought CD's fine and not the CDR's without scratchyness that the laser is probably out of alignment.
Usually it is a common problem found in a lot of CD players, they do not like CDRs or CDRWs and refuse to play them. It is a matter of pride with them, if you will not feed them the good stuff, originals, they will not play the cheap home grown copies.
Mine played them as long as the burned CD's were 'closed' (finalized, not able to be written to again, whatever you call it) and they were true 'audio' CD's (not MP3's or data).
I was having similar problem where my factory cd changer wouldn't play half of my cdrs. I couldn't really identify a common factor between the ones that it wouldn't play. All I know is they included cheap cdrs like Imation, and better quality ones specifically for music and it would play some and not others. Well, recently I ran a not so scientific test where I burned a copy of a cdr my changer wouldn't play on my computer at work using adaptec cd creator and the cd wouldn't play. I then took the same cd and made a copy using my internal dvd burner made by Sony on my home computer using the latest version of Nero software, and lo and behold, it worked! Not sure what made the difference, if it was the burner or the Nero software but all I know is that it worked. I then copied a bunch of other cdrs my changer wouldn't play and they all play fine now. So I guess one option is instead of spending a couple hundred bucks on a new changer, you could spend about $100 for a Sony dvd burner and that would solve your cdr problems and you get a dvd burner in the process. Just a thought.
Have a dvd burner and burn with nero, the CDR's play but are scratchy, they are a little better with the new dvd burner than the old cdr's were that were burned with my old cdr burner and adaptec but they are still scratchy and this is with audio CDRs. Since some CD changers play them fine, I have to assume that my changer is out of allignment or something. Rather than taking the chance at buying a used factory changer that would do the same thing, I was thinking it smarter to just buy a Pioneer changer, since this GM changer is made by Pioneer but I have a feeling it would not just plug in unless someone has an adapter? My wifes jeep plays the CDR's fine, my old Sony headunit played them fine. I'm happy to get this one repaired even, does anyone know where I would call for something like that? I just want to be able to enjoy my music. The option of using just store bought CD's isn't an option since most of them are scratched to crap. Don't ask how. Lets just say I have a wife!! Anyway, I want to copy them all to CDR's so I can play them decently and I really don't want to rip out the entire Bose stereo system.
Thanks
Rob
