Default don't be angry...intake question

i hate to be the guy that gets flamed or makes people mad, but i tried the search function and didn't get too many results...that and i'm not the more patient of people. besides, you guys come here when you have nothing else to do right?
anyway, question is...i'm about ready to go ahead and get a new inake/filter and couldn't decide between the halltech stinger or the blackwing. i looked around and both seem to me, at least so far, to be roughly the same, except from price. so is it pretty much personal opinion or is one a little better than the other?
also, the best price i saw for the blackwing was around 250...is this normal or is there a cheaper place?
chris says, "thanks a lot guys!" as he puts on his flame retardent suit...

Can't speak for the Halltech but I've been very pleased with the Blackwing. You should be able to do better than $250 but I haven't priced them recently.....good luck with your decision.

I went with the Vortex, but if I could do it again. I'd install the Blackwing. Mainly from a price standpoint. But that HallTech piece is nice

Blackwing. Check the " C5 Parts for Sale" section. There are often used ones for sale. Good Luck.

One difference is that the Blackwing is about to go out of production. That could be good (for price and clearance sales that are sure to come) or could be bad (for repair/spare parts or support if ever needed). Depends on how you look at it.

Chris, one point that I didn't see in any of the previous posts (unless I missed it) is that fact that the Halltech comes with a higher flowing air duct and smooth coupler (than stock).

I have a Blackwing, and am very pleased with it, but spent an additional $160 for an air bridge and coupler.

I think from a performance standpoint you would not be able to tell the difference, if you add an after market air bridge to the Blackwing.
So for the price, if I were buying today, I'd most likely go with the Halltech. JMHO

I went with the Vortex because I wanted a cold air intake. If you don't want a cold air intake you might as well do the zip-tie mod, since it is basically free.

How does the blackwing protect against hydro lock??? Anyway IMHO I think the issues of HL are blown out of proportion and are very rare indeed. But even in the owners manual it states that you must be cautious when driving through deep standing water as serious engine damage could happen if water enters the intake....SOOOOO even the stock air box is not immune to the possibility! The Halltech filter is excellent and comes with the coupler and air birdge for a price that is less than the blackwing!

I have the Halltech Stinger and paid 199.00, 1 month ago but I heard they are up to 250.00. You asked about Halltech and proctection against Hydrolock??? I don't think with the stinger you have to worry...but if you are referring to the Halltech TRAP then that would be a small concern...go with the Halltech Stinger IMHO
Good luck

I wouldn't drive through deep standing water even with the stock airbox with the Blackwing you would not have to worry about hydrolock either unless you plan on driving it into a river,,but then you would have even more serious issues

I just installed the Blackwing this past weekend. Got it from Texas speed for $195 plus shipping. Ordered last Monday and was delivered that week Friday.

Here's the link...

This was the cheapest I had seen as I was searching a number of the vendors.

I got the Halltech Stinger based on price....don't forget, forum members get the $199.00 price. It seems they both perform equally well, but I'm cheap!

When you consider what you get for the money, it becomes a no-brainer:

Blackwing ($220-$250): Filter

Halltech Stinger-R: ($199 for those who sign-in) Filter, larger-than-stock airbridge, and smooth TB coupler

Results: My Stinger-R and Borla Stingers (little gain on non-aspirated engine C5s) boosted my Rear Wheel HP by 12.3.

Both intake systems are protected from water, although adding the cold-air mod (downloadable from Halltech's site) will prevent HP loss when the engine bay temps get above 100 or so. Even with the cold air mod, water ingestion is only a very remote possibility.

I'm happy with the Blackwing that I had installed last year at CI.
I'm not familiar with the other intakes.
