Default First To Fourth Shift

My apologies if I am exhuming an old topic, but that shift is a !!!
If the notion was to make the beast more economical it works against itself...the (obviously) only way to beat it is to rev beyond the point it engages.

I have seen a plug in to bypass it...where does it go?

And thanks again for the advice, discussion and opinions...it adds much to the pleasure of the car (and I will post pictures next week...hopefully)

Are you a new owner?? If so, you will hardly ever see 1 to 4 when you get accustomed to driving it. It happened to me a few times the first day I owned my 04--doesn't happen now unless I am really driving easy, in which case, I don't mind the bypass. It's an easy fix to get rid of it, but drive it for awhile and you may find it's OK as is.

A very old topic I might say and avoiding the 1-4 shift is the least expensive mod you can do to this car.
Just drive the car like a Corvette and you'll never ever have it come into play.
On the other hand, if you like shifting out of first at 1200 rpms then you're going to 4th.

Drive the Car like it has 350+ hp under the hood.............

In over a year of ownership with my 2003 Z06, the CAGS has engaged only twice. All you have to do is up the rpms between shifts from frist to second. Try 500 to 1000 rpms more, it won't hurt the engine as it was designed to be driven harder than this. Unless you insist in driving like a girlie man.

It plugs into a connector that attaches to the drivers side of the transmission. Hard to miss it - I think it's marked "First to Fourth shift" or something like that. After jacking the car up, it takes approx 1.37 minutes to accomplish....

The plug goes under the car on the driver's side of the transmission in the rear. Once you get the car in the air, it is pretty obvious where it goes. Just unplug the old harness and plug in the CAGS eliminator. Be sure to zip tie the loose end up away from the transmission.

Actually you can make the first to second shift before the light comes on too. The algorithim GM uses involves not only engine RPM, but road speed as well. Kind of an "either/or" thing.
Personally I recommend getting the "plug". Then you can just ignore the light.

Look at it this way - think of the $1000 gas-guzzler tax you didn't pay because GM was able to design a trick solution to keep fuel economy numbers high for federal testing standards.

Good point, but I'm that strange place of loving a car which can use a ton of extinct dinosaur!

I've thought about the CAGS defeat install, but I'm rarely in that situation. Here's how:

1) You're 1st car at the light. Light turns green, idle off the line in 1st. Mumble Mumble Mumble Grumble Humm up to 16mph. Hit it up to 25mph in 1st, (roughly 0.04 seconds elapsed) Problem solved.

2) You're 2nd at the light, a Mini-Van is 1st. Deal with the slow pull from the lite and just hang back. Give yourself 4 car lengths from the MV. Hit it up to 25mph in 1st, (roughly 0.04 seconds elapsed) Problem solved.

Anyway, that's how I defeat the CAGS

Once you install the CAGS defeat you can have the light turned off with LS1-edit.
