Default Question: Hood liner

Does anyone have any pic's of their stock hood with the hood liner removed? Does it look nice without it, and does it really serve a purpose. My engine bay is all dressed up and I need to do something with the liner I know I could have it painter, but I plan on getting the MCM hood in the near future and don't want to spend the money on painting the liner.

Thanks Steve

All cars use hood liners, so yes they have a purpose. Mostly used for sound dampening.

Yes it is painted underneath the liner i have an 03 but if you take it off you are going to have holes where the liner was attached.older cars never had hoodliners like the ones they have today.

Depends on how far back you go but most cars did have them.

I would also worry about heat damage to the paint on long rides.

I think car engines run a lot hotter today than they used to. Plus the engine compartment is much tighter. I would worry about heat damage to the underside of the hood if it was removed.

The underhood heat isn't as high as you people like to think.

For one, look at how many people have painted their rail covers and hoodliners. It's standard automotive paint, and it holds up just fine on them, and the rail covers sit just inches above the headers/exhaust manifolds, which are the main source of heat in the engine compartment.

If you're still in doubt, go take your car out, run it hard, get it good and hot. Shut it off, quickly pop the hood, and (other than the exhaust), find a place on the engine where you CAN'T comfortably hold your hand. You won't find one. The thermostat housing and alternator housing will likely be the next warmest areas, but you can still touch them without getting burned. And that is surface temp...the air just a few inches away won't even be half that temp.

As I understand it, the primary function of the hood insulation is fire suppression. In the event of an underhood fire, it is designed to drop down and smother the fire. Sound deadening is another reason.

The stock hood is painted under the liner. Looks good IMO.
