I took my baby into Capital Chevrolet here in Montgomery Alabama for a simple oil change. I left the next day for a road trip back to West Texas (little over 1,000 miles). Unfortunately it rained most of the trip, until West Texas when the rain stops and the blowing dust begins.
I stopped for gas in Texas and checked the oil level. To my amazement there was not oil filler cap!! I immediately taped the opening and got on the phone to voice my "concern" to the service manager who lucky for him was 18 hours away.
I pulled into the next dealer I saw (lets try this again) to get the oil changed and hopefully remove whatever had gotten into the engine from the rain and dust...
I have lost all confidence in a shop that cant remember to put on a simple oil cap. What would they forget if I had to have major repairs done? Time to find another place to have work done. Am I overreacting!? :mad
Yes, I should have checked under the engine before I left to chech the level. WONT HAPPEN AGAIN.
That sucks doesn't it. You pay for service and get the shaft. This should be good for at least a couple of oil changes and new floor mats to get things right. Get on their case.

First of all, over reacting? Never! This is NOT what you should expect for a stealership, however, having hung around here for a certain length of time, I've learned it's what I might expect. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule but, I would have felt the same way.
Second, don't beat yourself up for not checking yourself. When you pay $70-90 for anything service oriented, THEY (service guys) should not be HUA while working on your car. I am positive they'd throw just as big a fit when the roles are reversed. Hope you feel better.
It is hard to find a good GM dealer with a decent shop. The local Chevy dealer here was to replace a rear window seal for me in my truck. During the process, they scratched the back door so badly the door had to be repainted. They tried to hide it from me and give me excuses that it took 5 days to replace a seal while they were actually repainting my truck. :mad
From: the GOCC are everywhere, even back from "band camp"
what? They didn't drop it off a lift and blame you? Then glue it back together and so on? You're getting off easy! (don't know if you've seen that thread elsewhere, but it's a horror story). The dealer should make some extra compensation, (pay for the one on the road, and throw in some extra as good faith) like someone said. Glad you caught it when you did. Good luck.

that sucks ... if my car is ever at gm for anything, i'm standing over their shoulder watching just to make sure something funny doesn't happen .. like a nail in my month old runflats. (the one time I wasn't there watching)
One of my first oil changes at the dealer before I was in my house to do it myself the jackazzes spilled oil all over the damn place....I went back and like a ****....they cleaned my entire engine bay..I was frickin pizzed :mad
I picked mine up after some major engine work and, in front of the service manager, the service writer, the chief mech, and his helper, proceeded to pop the hood and check the oil. You should have seen the looks and heard the chuckles and comments from the whole staff UNTIL I showed them it was almost 2 quarts low and WTF?!!?
If you can not watch them do the oil change take it some place else. They do not get it right unless someone is watching over them. Never trust a dealer to do it right watch and check everything.

Would seem like this would be a no brainer for the dealership to at least put an oil cap back on. Its not like they couldn't have noticed that it was missing.
I'd be finding me another dealership, that's for sure.
Good to know that I am not over reactiong about this.
I did get the dealer to pay for the oil change and the filler cap from the other dealership. I guess that is all that I will get out of the deal.
There is another dealer nearby, guess I will try a new place next time!
Reminds me of when I bought my Mistu Eclipse. Took it in a couple days after buying it for some minor stuff which they claimed wasn't a problem and ended up with some nice scratches on the door which they claimed weren't their fault. I've found its really not worth the hassle to buy new anymore.
