Default Houston Streets

Just spent a week in Houston and I couldn't believe the condition of the streets. This city used to me known for maintaining roads and freeways. It looks like all the money has gone to the new downtown rail system and not to road repairs. I'm just glad I didn't drive the Vette. No doubt, I'd have hit one of the deep holes (anywhere I drove) and broke something or blew out a tire (or fell in).

What's happend Houston?

Our tax dollars at work, the city puts in the pot holes to keep you from speeding, they can't afford enough poilce officers.

What's happened to Houston?

the former mayor screwed up the budget in Houston so bad that the city is severely financially handicapped to do ANYTHING! I was lobbying to have Greens rd near the airport repaved/rebuilt - they said its not in the budget until 2007!!! hopefully Mayor Bill White will do better!

OMG. Houston is a freaking dump...the roads really do suck, and have for a LOOOONG time. I refuse to take my Vette into Houston anymore. Just isn't worth it. I live on the outskirts of that stink pit... just far enough away to have a nice life.

so true, have lived in Houston most of my life, except for school and NEVER take the vette downtown as it seems the streets are always under construction

I lived here when Brown was police chief and heard a number of years after we moved that he was mayor. You're right ... not much of a public speaker but a heck of a yes man......

I just can't get over this. The only way to describe this is neglect. I honestly don't think I could drive two blocks down any road within the Houston city limits without hitting (or dodging) a serious pot hole. Seems like I saw on the news where a dump truck was blocking traffic because of a broken wheel, cause by a pot hole. Think about the ones you don't hear about .....

Unfortunately, its not just Houston. We have the same problems around here. If I ever make it down to Houston, I'll have to keep this info in mind. Hate to ruin a car.

I just got in from Houston yesterday and didn't find it that bad for city that has a lot of rain. The rain will really take a toll on asphalt. The beltway 8, the 610 and the I10 and the 45 is where I did most of my driving in a rented Impala. Saw Corvettes of Houston off the 45 so I stopped and visited for a minute. The humidity is terrible with that heat, dam I am glad I live in Cali.

And they are doing an excellent job with the potholes there.

On the good side, some of them are so big that they can trap Hondas in those things.

They cant fix the street because they put in wheel chair ramps and the pedestrian walk and dont walk signs at the beltway feeder and 290 ,that leads into a mud hole and field.Looks like that is all that will ever be there as there is nothing anywere near there where some one can walk from or to.I am sure there is plenty other places like that too!

uh...I travel a lot and I just don't see the same things in other cities like Orlando, San Diego, etc. that I see in Houston.

If you drive fast enough you'll jump right over the pot holes, smooth as glass. Helps to be an ex-moto-crosser.

It's not Lee P Brown, it's Lee P "FREAKIN" Brown! Then to get more government funds, they take main arteries and paint a damned bicycle lane for the 5 or 6 riders in this town. This naturally reduces vehiclar traffice from 4 to 2 lanes!!! Absolutely brilliant!! Now these "bike" lanes are littered with trash. I wish I could pity those cycllists riding in to downtown; for some reason I just don't feel any pain for them!!!!
I live one block off Post Oak and Westheimer and the traffic due to construction is hell in is area folks!!!!
New for this football season - - - no more park and ride - - - - you have to take the train from Hell!!!!! An attempt to bring up ridership by force? Really p---es me off!!!!!

most of you are too young to remember that at one time the areas outside the beltway were nothing but rice paddies

Here's another one for you. I was driving down Shepherd Drive and missed my turn so made a right to make the block. One street over (don't remember the street name and it was getting dark) I made a turn to come back towards Shepherd and drove over a manhole .... The damn cover was missing! WTF .... Are they pawning manhole covers now? Between the potholes and missing manhole covers, you don't stand a chance. No wonder everyone's gone to 4-wheel drive vehicles with oversized tires and lift kits.

huevos03 - I do remember the rice paddies. I also remember the condition of the roads back then. Much better than they are now.
