Hello everyone, I just purchased a 2000 corvette w/6-spd. I have figured out how to use all of the guages but no matter what I try I can not get it into competitive driving mode. I have held the active handling button down for over a minute and nothing happens. I know you have to be stopped but is there another trick that I don't know??

The Active Handling button is on the center console below the shifter. If you have Active Handling it will say so. Otherwise it will say Traction Control or be blank. Active Handling (JL4) became an option in mid-1998 production with the introduction of the Pace Cars. Generation II Active Handling became standard for 2001.

There are 3 modes to the Active Handling System(AHS). And only 2 for the Traction Control (TC).

ON Both TC and AHS are ON. This is the default mode. If you turn the system OFF or put the car in Competetive Mode you can go to this mode by tapping the button.

OFF Both TC and AHS are OFF. You can switch into this mode by tapping the button at anytime. The yellow sliding car symbol will light on the dash.

Competetive Mode AHS is ON and TC is OFF. To engage this mode come to a complete stop. Press and Hold the button until Competetive Mode comes up in the DIC and the car beeps. To clear the message from the DIC press the Reset button. This will not turn off Competetive Mode.
Beginning with the 2001 model it is no longer be necessary to come to a complete stop to switch into Competetive Mode.

When you turn off the car, the system will reset itself to the ON mode.

Active Handling attempts to control the car for a skid/spin condition by selectively applying the brakes on one or more wheels. It can not overcome the laws of physics. So, it is possible to spin the car even with AH turned on.

Traction Control will attempt to control wheelspin by applying the brakes and/or cutting back on the throttle and spark. It can take a moment or two for normal acceleration to resume after TC comes on.

I am not sure which year they made this change but on the early years of the C5 you needed to be stopped to change into Competitive Mode. On my 2001, I am able to change to Competitive Mode while the car is moving.

Sounds to me as though your car does NOT have Active Handling. Therefore it will NOT show COMPETITIVE DRIVING mode

 

Well I checked the window sticker on the vehicle and it does have active handling, when I push the button once is says active handling disabled, but I still cannot get it to go to competitive mode no matter how long I hold the button, stopped or moving (possibly it is broke??)

 

do you have to have active handling in order to have competition mode??
