Since I just recently bought my '98 I have not received the column lock recall and I am thinking I probably won't. The history of the car says it had some column lock work done a few years ago. But I can hear the "zzzt" noise every time I take the key out. How do I go about getting the recall done on my car with no letter from GM?
Go to the dealership and have them run your VIN # that should get it going for you. It's a recall so it's not a warranty thing. It should all be taken care of for you if it needs to be done. Let us know how it goes.
Since you have an auto-tranny, it'd be great if you can get the dealership to install a block-off plate. In the meantime, try not to grab your steering wheel to enter or exit. This action seems to accelerate failure of the CL mechanism.

Thanks. I have always been carefull when getting in and out. So far I have been lucky. (knocks on wood)
