I have the Kenwood KNA-Dvsomething...
I like it, especially the feature to put in a phone number and it pulls the address up. The box says that it will tell me when to turn but it doesn't so I need to call Kenwood about that.
The map is good, and is pretty updated. It gives you 3 different routes with their distance and estimated time of arrival and you can choose one. Very user friendly, and quite customizable.

I have had a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 for about a year and love it. I get regular updates to download from Garmin for both the unit and the maps which use Mapsource. I would buy the same one if I had it to do over again. I believe they now have a 2620 and 2650 and 2660. Check their site at Garmin to see the characteristics of each. Good luck with your search for the right one.
KernelDee; I want the 2610 very badly; but can't justify the purchase right now.
The wife also needs a new PDA; and the Garmin 3600 "seems" to do both. I am trying to find someoen that has purchased the 3600 to see what the drawbacks are.
I bought a Magellan 700, about $1100-1200. It is portable from one vehicle to another. It plugs into your lighter or powerport and is only on when your ignition is on. It is very easy to use, hard drive is already loaded, directions are continually verbal as well as on the screen, very accurate. I would suggest renting a Hertz car for a day with the Magellan Neverlost GPS system(basis for the Magellan 700). I believe it is a $9. per day upgrade. Whether you purchase this GPS or another, it will give you a good idea of how they work and what will be best for your needs.
I purchased a Magellan Roadmate 700, and have been very happy with it. http://gpsinformation.us/roadmate/rm700rev.html I agree with pretty much everything they say about the unit. There are quite a few new features and hardware thats been included since they tested the unit.
The vent mount will not work in the Vette. There is no permanent mount kit sold for the Vette either (just the generic one that would require drilling holes). The suction cup mount thats included now (very powerful) with a one-side adhesive foam piece (to prevent rattling noise) works very well though.
Here is a quick pic...
I'm sure there are other good ways to mount it (I'd like to know btw, as I could perhaps try it out). Note that it has a quick release feature that leaves the suction cup in place and releases just the Roadmate from its dock, so that it can be locked up.
The nicest install would be one of the headunits with flip out touch-screen LCDs and built in GPSs that work off DVDs. They are expensive though.

I have a Garmin 2610 and am very pleased with it. Just came back from a 2200 mile trip and the GPS found all the hotels, restaurants and attractions that I looked for. Newer models are available with a built in hard drive instead of a compact flash card. Definately a worthwhile addition.

allirobb & ducman69 is right about this unit! It's not that I worked for them, I own different mobile GPS units from other manufacturer as well.
Here's Magellan's website for more info! http://www.magellangps.com/en/
I am looking into the new Pioneer AVIC-N1 or something nav,DVD, rear cam ready and.. system monitoring built in.. any one have this unit.. pros cons.???
Just got a Garmin 2620. We went on a 600 plus mile trip the last two days and all I can say is WOW. This thing is is incredible. A little pricey, but it does so much.
I have the Garmin 2620. I chose the 2620 because all maps of the US are pre-loaded, there is no downloading of maps required like on the 2610. I took a 4-week, 9,000 mile trip this summer and it was a lifesaver. On the trip back from Georgia I had no route planned and no hotel reservations, about lunce we would decide how far we wanted to go, look for a motel and call them and make a reservation. By the time we got to the hotel they were turning people away, I'm glad we could make reservations. It also tells you way ahead of time what the next course correction is. When the highway splits it tells you to keep left or right. It will also give you things like your speed, altitude, compass heading, time of arrival at your final destination, miles to your next turn. It also has a remote control so the passenger can operate it without leaning forward.
I got mine from GPS Now at GPS Now. It lists for 1,299.99, but if you add it to your cart the price is $959.95. I think that is a good deal.
I have the avic-n1 works perfect used it allot when i first got it because i was on the road alot . But now my some just watches spongbob while were on trips.Im going to be selling it and installing another system in my car without a display.I will sell whole sytem with voice command and steering wheel remote option for $1500.00 and has full warranty ill even include the original receipt .See sig for pics of unit installed

allirobb, ducman69, and cybernetic, thanks for the postings.
ducman69, thanks for the picture of the Magellan Roadmate 700 and how it's mounted! Also, thanks for the links, this information is just what I was looking for!
cybernetic, I take it from your post that you've worked for Nav System manufacturer(s) and that the Magellan Roadmate 700 is the state of the art. Seems like everything is Magellan or Garmin (or DVD aka Kenwood/Pioneer or Acura!?). I take it that you've checked them out, what should I be looking for when I compare them?
I just bought the Garmin 2620. I used it today for the first time. It was very simple to learn to use, very simple to install (just plug it in, turn it on, and go! All the maps are already in there, so there is no downloading required.), and very accurate. It gives verbal directions as well as direction on the screen. It also re-routes you immediately if you make a wrong turn or miss a turn. You can set it for your preferences, too. I really can't find any complaints about it.
Oh yeah, if you do decide to buy one, don't go to your local Best Buy. I bought mine online and saved $425 from what I would have paid at Best Buy. Look at www.gpsexplorer.com. They also have a new eyes-free, hands-free unit called VCommand, that is interactive. You just TELL it where you want to go, and it TELLS you how to get there. There is no screen at all.
