Thanks for all the answers, I think I will give the vararam system a try. I will let you know how it goes.

You aren't going to see the performance gains that the VaraRam gives by looking at a dyno chart. When a car is dynoed, it is SITTING STILL!

Side note to your installation instructions:
Loosen the very bottom clamp on the MAF sensor that connects to the lower filter housing and then snug down the upper right corner of the upper housing.
You have to push in the fan shroud to get it to fit snug.
Then tighten the lower clamp on the MAF and you'll see it fits fine.
This is what I discovered on mine. Same problem as yours.

I also discovered that the air bridge does not align up straight to the throttle body and that is where the problem is.
When you align it and connect it, it kinks the upper air box and hence the gap in the upper right corner.

I had an aftermarket air bridge and it will work, you have to do the same thing as above for it and the stock air bridge.

After a lengthy conversation with LFPE on air bridges, I put the stock one back on and it actually helped smooth down my idle.

You get a choice of filters when you order a VaraRam, so keep in mind that the VaraRam filter that'll give you the greatest gains is also the flimsiest. Terrific for racetrack applications, but maybe not ideal if you want something more damage resistant for the road.

The VaraRam is overall real nice; Kinda a hassle to install at first, but it's easy to change the filters; Run the flimsy filter on track days and dyno days, run a more robust filter for cruisin'.

The solution is at hand, get either the Halltech Stinger or Blackwing, then do Dave68's cold air mod linked on Halltech's site. His mod puts the cold air where it flows up the radiator shroud. You cutout the shroud, install stainless steel mesh, and a wall file folder as a scoop on the underside of the shroud. It's brilliant. Don't know of any water/hydrolock issues with it, but no one has reported such.
