I am getting a light chirping comin from my 97 A4 around the radiator (I think). It is nothing too outrageous, but of course it irritates me. The chirping does NOT get worse as I push the pedal - really can't hear it at that point.
Do you guys ever put the belt dressing/lube on the belts under you hood? Should I? Any specific kind the best? More importantly, should I stay away from from any kind - don't want to hurt my precious .
If it's the belt and you've had it a while, it will just continue to get worse. In the meantime, I would stay away from those belt dressings you can buy. They might work for a couple of days but they collect dirt and the squeal just gets worse no matter how much dressing you reapply. I've always had good luck with candle wax rubbed on the surface of the belt that rides on the pulleys. It's an old trick my dad taught me.
There's no substitue for a new, high-quality belt like the Gatorbacks though. Also, carefully check your tensioners and idler pulleys along with the crank pulley for trueness and wobble.

How hard is it to check these? I have a buddy (who used to work at a Chev dealer) who works on my Vettey in his garage - will he be able to do it? Or does it require a full service shop?
