I picked up my '02 Z06 last night. I love it. But,I pointed out to the salesman prior to taking the car the the key for the lug nut loc was missing. He told me he would order one. I was speaking to a friend of mine who works at a parts dept. at another Chevy dealership and he told me there is no way they can get the key without the ID number.
I don't see any paper work with the ID number anywhere. Do these locks have to be cut off?
Removing the keyed lug nuts is fairly easy. Do a search here in the forums. I guess Chevy stopped supplying them since they realize they provide hardly any protection at all
If you need to get the lugnut off just use a 12 point socket that is slightly too small to fit, pound it on with a hammer and unscrew it, works all the time.
Does your car have locking lugs? My 04 didn't have them.
My 04 Z has them (McGuards). Its possible it was a dealer installed item I suppose, not really 100% sure about that though. Perhaps the dealers get them and its up to them as to whether or not to install them ?
In any case, perhaps one of those sears all in one sockets may do the trick .. worth a shot I would imagine as opposd to having to air chisel them off.
BTW - The all in one socket I am referring to is the one with the bunch of small thin rod-like things inside the socket. I do believe sears makes one. If it works, great .. if not, still a good tool to have.
Not to worry...we have removed them at my Dad's shop many a time...if your careful, you won't damage anything except maybe the nut itself...but who cares, because you will replace with a non-lock.
Thanks for all of your replies. I'm back from the dealer and the shop guy had no problem getting them off. He took a "special" socket and hammered it on to the keyed lug. Then added an extention and used an impact gun. It came right off. They gave me a new set. They asked if I wanted plain lugs but I told them to keep it stock and put back what came from the factory. I probably should have taken the non-locking lugs but what the heck.
Most tire dealers have gripper sockets to remove locking lugnuts. It is no big deal and easy to do. The gripper sockets bite into the lugnut to get a good hold on it. It destroys the lugnut but it comes off easy.
