Default Tires

HELLO My fellow VETTE owners!

Well, the time is drawing near for me to deploy on this crazy submarine I am stationed on and this means that the VETTE is going into storage for six months. Yes, six months without the pleasure of cruising the rough roads of Hawaii's Island of Oahu!

When I return the first item on the list to get done to the VETTE is a new set of tires. I will tell you all (which I am sure you all know) these run-flats are no joke when I punch it off of the line. I have gotten so squirrelly that I have to completely let off the gas. I the concept of the run-flat is a great idea, but for us folks that like to hit it from time to time, it sure can be an interesting event if you are not careful.

Okay...What tires should I go with?

Yes, this is a question that has been asked before, but I must ask you guys again.

What is the tire to buy?

I am looking for a good tire that will be good in the rain, good for handling and decent for launching. I am not a guy that lives at the track and is more concern with all around tires. Tires that are decent for you will more than likely be great tires for me.

Thanks for the time and recommendations!

Micah

Kumho MX in either run flat or non run flat. Best bang for the buck tire out there. They do everything well.

...except last - treadwear rating compared to new Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 or Michelin Pilot Sports is terrible [check tirerack.com for proof].

Treadwear cannot be compared between tires.

There will certainly be tires that will have higher mileage but there is always a trade off between tirewear and traction.

I highly recommend Toyo T1S tires. I have a set on my FRC and truly love them. I live in Olympia, Washington, therefore, wet performance is imiportant. However, I want good dry performance as well. These tires give both. They work well in autocross also.

Good Luck on your deployment.

Thanks for this thread. You're not the only one who is shopping for tires as I notice last week that tires on my car are almost gone! I couldn't believe it! I only have 25K on them????
So, I'm using this thread to make note of all suggestions and compare prices! (Not fun to have to spend so much money when holidays are around the corner!

Your kidding right? I had to get a new set after 9000. You are not having enough fun in your vette...:-)

Also, someone above said you can't compare treadware rating... That is not true. The treadware rating is exactly for that purpose. Do a search about this topic and you will see that each tire goes through a standard test and measures wear to get a rating.

I would also have to agree with the person above who recommended the Toyo Proxes T1-S tires. They are great in the rain (nice deep grooves) and the tread pattern is very agressive looking. It has a treadware rating of 280 which is great for Vette sized tires. They are very grippy. Not as good as the stock Z06 F1's but better than the EMT's. I autocrossed in EMT's and the Toyos and with the Toyos I raced against a guy with race tires. We have the same car and he is a little better autocrosser than me and I got to within 0.9 secs of his fastest time so they have very good grip. The best part is that they are cheep. Check out onlinetires.com. I think they have them for ~$725. Nothing against the Khumo's but if you are going to be driving a lot in rain, I can't imagine any tire better, other than the new goodyears with the similar tread pattern.

Sorry so long...

I have the Nitto 555 and I have over 30,000 on them and they still have plenty of tread left. I have done burnouts, plenty of second gear scratches and these suckers just last. I'm sure they have at least another 5k to 10k left on them. I don't know how they compare to the others as far as wet traction or racing, but I can definitely say they last.

www.tirerack.com
"The Department of Transportation requires each manufacturer to grade its tires under the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) labeling system and establish ratings for treadwear, traction, and temperature resistance. These tests are conducted independently by each manufacturer following government guidelines to assign values that represent a comparison between the tested tire and a control tire. While traction and temperature resistance ratings are specific performance levels, the treadwear ratings are assigned by the manufacturers following field testing and are most accurate when comparing tires of the same brand."

Here's my recommendations:

Runflats - Firestone Firehawks.

Non-runflats: Either the Goodyear GS-D3, Goodyear Supercars or Michelin Pilot sports.

I know there are a lot of negatives to the current Goodyear runflats, but I just drove a C6 with the new generation of Goodyear F1 Supercar runflats. What a difference! The capabilities of the car certainly made part of the difference, but the tires were great also. Maybe they will be available in C5 sizes soon.

Goodyear GS D3s: Among the absolute best at dry AND wet traction, very good price, and are made right here in the USA. I've had mine now for at least two months and I feel as if the road is paved with the same material you find on running tracks - MUCH smoother ride, very quiet, and fantastic handling - HIGHLY recommended!

Now you're talking about brand NEW C6 options??? pricewise I believe it would end up even higher than any other tire. We're talking about performance and most economical ones. No doubt we all would like to have the best! but I continue to research now....

oh oh...
