[Z06] Halltech Stinger update
Assuming turbulent airflow was the problem, I decided to cut a (6x6) hole in the shroud centered under the warhead filter. I then canabalized a clothes dryer vent and mounted it in the hole forming a makeshift cold air scoop. Now the filter can get additional cold air from underneath. My theory was the additional airflow might smooth the overall flow passing the MAF wires thus giving the PCM more accurate readings and eliminating any lean condition due to PCm errors.
Well, I've put about 1000 miles on the car and haven't had any check engine lights. I'll consider it a success if I get another code free 1000 miles. The car performs like a champ and I continue to get a much better throttle response with the Stinger than I did with the stock box. And that includes the zip tie mod with K&N filter. I tried many different combinations between stock and stinger but only the full stinger gave a definite performance boost.
I can only speak for my experience with the Stinger, but the performance boost I felt from it was just too good to give up on. That's why I tried the scoop mod. And the best part was all it cost me was $6 and a couple hours of time to install.
Thought I would share my experience with those owners of cars with screenless MAFs who are sitting on the fence regarding getting a Stinger.

Since I had no way of knowing if the mod would work, I didn't document the install. I went to Lowes and picked up a clothes dryer outside vent assembly. They had two sizes. I went with the smaller one. That way I knew the filter would span the opening with no danger of falling in. The only piece I used was the plastic part that would sit on the outside of the house. It directs the exhaust down because of its shape. Turned upside down sitting in the hole in the shroud, it directs air up into the filter that sits on top of it.
I outlined the filter with it installed with a white crayon on the shroud. I then pulled out the Stinger and measured the scoop for the holes dimensions. BTW, I did this with the shroud installed. I didn't want to pull it out if I didn't have to.
I then measured and drew lines for the cutout in the center of the outlines I made of the filter. This would position the scoop in the center of the filter. If done correctly, the top cutout line will be just below the bottom of the shroud's indented area. Do not cut into the indented area.
I cut the hole out with a carpet knife. I then fitted the scoop into the hole marking the four corners to drill holes for screws. I then removed the scoop and drilled the four holes. I used 4 clip nuts over the holes and 4 machine screws to fasten the scoop to the shroud. I then reinstalled the Stinger and the filter now sits on top of the scoop completely hiding it from view.
Hope this helps.
