been to 160 plus in my a4,,,before the blower,, I feel safe , as I feel I am a confident and schooled driver, BUT, i cant tell the animals, cops and other ignorant drivers how or what to do when I am at high speeds, thats whats scares me. I deer at 125 would not be pretty, hell, even a possum would be ugly,,lol. I have made several foolish high speed runs on 4 lane roads, during the day and even though there was no traffic, if still was freaky to worry what cop or animal was waiting on me. I try to stay under 100 now. I do like to see passengers faces when I stand on it and run it up to triple digits,,,,,but I back down real quick,,,,Its too bad we done have some road we can run fast on, the usa has some good roads, and we own them, why cant we use them like we want...

Some LEOs tend to really frown on that stuff! But as was said, if you don't feel safe at those speeds - you aren't and just don't drive that fast.

But we all see people in all types of cars try to put their right foot through the firewall and then "think" they are "real" drivers. They'll do it in traffic or in the rain, or without consideration of road conditions or what is on their car for tires/brakes/suspension.

If you really want to be a better driver - get involved in sanctioned events - either on drag strips or autocross or go to a performance driving school. You can learn a lot when you see a Bondurant-schooled driver get in a rented Intrepid and just smoke a whole lot of "sports car drivers" with modded cars in an autocross.

What is between your ears counts more than anything on your car when it comes to speed.

Did 162 in fifth and still climbing. I'm sure I would have exceeded 165 if the wife wasn't threating to kill me.

It's because 5th & 6th are overdrive gears. The drag of wind resistance limits the speed of the car to the horsepower avaialible. In 6th gear the engine can't attain maximum HP to overcome the wind resistance. In 5th, being a lower gear (higher numerically), it can reach maximum HP.

I've only been up to 147, I think I was in 5th, versus Michael Jordan in his SLK 320 on the PA Turnpike.. all I know is I got a little intimidated by what seemed to be a lot more horsies in the pen waiting to come out. What I liked was the smooth feel and control at that speed. There was no shaking, shimmying, or vibrating. Of course, my **** may have had as firm a grip on the seat as my hands on the wheel!

Well for the Z it's
1st - 50
2nd - 72
3rd - 100
4th - driving way too fast to be looking at the speedo and shifting at the sametime.
5th - I think GM claims 171, but I'll never see it.

I live in Germany and I still haven't had it over 120. Yes, MPH not KPH -even though as fast as most people drive here if you aren't doing over 100 you better stay clear of the left lane! My fear is mostly that someone will pull out in front of me and a little lack of confidence. I am now used to driving 80-100 MPH all the time- I'm gonna be in trouble when I get back to the States.

If I was back in Germany with this thing I'd be flying! Back in the late 80's I had a Stang GT in Germany and would run it up above what the speedo would register!

Overdrive, great for gas mileage but as was stated earlier, doesn't let your rpm's get high enough to access the power needed to overcome the resistance at those speeds. Same reason my A4 tops out at 164-ish in 3rd. The 5th gear in the manual I was told wasn't an overdrive but was it's 1:1 gear, same as 3rd in the A4, anyone know?

1st 0-57 mph
2nd 0-125 mph
3rd 0-164 mph
4th 0- 26 mpg

A few early mornings I took the Vette out on the 684 in NY and there was no traffic, the roads for the most part on that stretch are really smooth with no major curves...I got my baby to 154(hud) around 4000 rpm)and it was a totally awesome feeling because the car is so stable, and it feels good, like it finally is hitting it's stride...but you cant do it alot, traffic dictates your speed, if I see cars up ahead I slow down...(if there is alot of cars I will be at the speed limit (you have to look way ahead when traveling fast like that, and be braking a 1/2 mile before...but anyway I don't do this on a regular basis because it is impossible, once in a while if the roads are clear, very well paved highways and you know the road and there are no cops or traffic...it sure wakes your butt up! You know it is more dangerous and harder to drive in traffic on the highway and in the city than doing a quick blast in your Vette on a deserted highway...that is my opinion

Did 95-105 for over an hour on the way back from Bloomington this year in a caravan. I felt uneasy at first but was very used to it after an hour. It felt like I could run faster when we slowed to 60. I have had it to 140 and was a little nervous but the car was stable. I would like to get up to ~160 on a track at some point in my life. Maybe someday do the Bragg Smith school in their Z06's.

BTW...
4th gear is 1:1
5th is an overdrive but top speed attained.
6th is overdrive... no top speed.
