Default Which Gears?

Ok guys I need a little input. My car is going in for new gears tomorrow. I have not really decided on which ratio yet if you can believe that
Anyway, H/C coupe with MN6...Yes I do drag race it from time to time. Most people I talk to say 4.10s and I was leaning to 3.90's but maybe the 4.10's make more sense? I'm wondering about overall driveability etc. I do take the car on long trips from time to time, most recently from Canada and Ohio and back. I'm interested in knowing what RPM I'm looking at 75mph in 5th and 6th for each? How much did the gear change effect your fuel mileage. I know that I could always change it back but I would rather only do this once. BTW I do have a set of 17" rims with BFG Drag Radials that I'm planning to use at the next Corvette Challenge at E town. So.......Opinions?

Personally, if you want drivability as well as track performance, I would say 3.73's or 3.90's.I personally feel that the 4.10's would be overkill on the street. Not to mention, just hard to drive in traffic.

However, it all comes down to what you want, what you like, and what you are willing to put up with to have maximum performance. The 4.10's w/b bitchin as hell during track time though.

Well, after the overwhelming response to this thread I decided to go with 4.10s and see how these work. I can always change it back.....its just "Mo Money".

I would go with no more than 390's if you are going to go on some long trips...if you were just going to be at the track and not drive much than 410's would be fine.

oh by the way, I am sure you thought of this but be ready to buy some more rubber!!!

Are 4.10's really hard to dive on long trips?

Hey, I'll let you guys know as soon as I do. I pick the car up tomorrow and have to "be a good boy" until I put about 500 miles or 3 or 4 heat cycles. Basically breaking in the gears. Otherwise you risk getting a gear set that whines Anyway, from what I understand 4.10's are not much different from 3.90's on a MN6 as far as feel goes. From what Cartek says the 4.10's match up well for mn6.
So, I should have these broken in for the Next Corvette Challenge at E town and we'll see if I "Chose wisely". I have a pair of 17" BFG DR's which are worn down like slicks now.... just right for a few more runs.
Anyway, I'll post the RPM vs indicated speed just to give you some reference as well as gas mileage. Anyway the "on sale" price was $1095 installed 350 for hardend output shafts.

3:73 or 3:90. I was very close to getting 4:10's last year -- I'm glad I didn't as I think with the ProCharger they would be a bit much.

Took a look at your profile - nice setup. That is the package I am currently dreaming about - just starting my mods. It must be a pretty wild ride to begin with, can't imagine what it will be like with the 410s. Just got a set of 410s installed by Cartek on Monday - can't wait for the weather to improve so I can take it out. My next mod is probably a cold air intake (Vararam) - out of curiosity, why did you go with the Blackwing (why leave a bunch of horsepower on the table given everything else you have done)? Would be interested in your take on this since I am headed down the same path you are.

Please follow up and let us know what it is like with the new gears.

Go with 4.10's. Can't remember 5th but 75 in 6th is real close to 2000rpms.

4.10 gears do not effect drivability, they make the car feel like it has more
power and make it much easier to light the tires! They make 5th much
more usable.

I lost 2 or 3 miles to the gallon with 4.10 gears.

Get 4.10s, you won't reget it, you'll be glad you did!

Whatever you go with, make sure you break them in properly.

Hi ZX11

Thats easy.......no Vararams in stock at the time when I had the work done. So they had to dyno it with something....and the blackwing was it since it was in stock. Anyway, along with the gear job Dave is installing a Vararam as well. It was supposed to be installed back in June with all the other mod's, but like I said before.. Anyway, I pick the car up tomorrow. I need better street tires though, still have the Run Flats on the car. BTW, the Vararam is a good mod to do for your FRC, IMO.

Default 3.90's

I lost 2 MPG and it runs around 1700 RPM @ 65-70 MPH.
I love how it drives in 4th-6th!

Well everybody picked up the car today and drove home like like a slow poke. Got to go through several more heat cycles before I can see what kind a difference these gears have made. For you guy's contimplating it at 62mph showed 1600 rpm or there abouts. First is noticeably shorter as well as second. So far fuel mileage around 26 mpg at highway speed. Hopefully I'll be able to run it hard by the end of the week.

Those RPM's aren't bad at all. I went to 2500 RPM @70MPH with 3.90's on my A4. With 3.43's it was like 1800 RPM. I'm first breaking in the 3.90's but boy it makes a big difference on my vert! Enjoy.

Drove it some more today 1950 rpm at 75mph 6th gear. So with a little more break in time we'll shall see what improvements in acceleration. Need better tires for the street though. MPG around 24 average.

Well the gears are fully broken in and what a difference in performance. It really screams from 0-60 and 0-100. However, it has one downside....it has made me realize that the tires need replacing. Actually, I've been wanting to get non-runflats for a while so now its the perfect time.
