I'm one of the few that had a problem with the hood closing over the Stinger air bridge. I ended up using my stock air bridge with the Stinger filter element. It is my understanding that the Blackwing uses the stock aribridge and has a smaller surface area, making the Stinger the better choice.
Stinger has a higher flowing air bridge and I've recently read that there is no longer a fitament issue. I have the Blackwing, but DAVE68 has dyno runs which show the stinger gives more torque, as the two offer very close HP improvments. Check with Dave68, he is the stinger guru.
The Stinger comes with an airbridge and smooth coupler. The Stinger air bridge is much thicker in the area where it goes over the raidaitor, thus the problem with hood clearance. I have only seen a couple of people complain about having a problem with the hood closing, so I don't know what the deal is. I played around with making it work for hours to no avail. I even removed the hood liner and still couldn't use it.
I just installed the Stinger last night. There is a rub issue on the hood liner but very slight on my "00. Definitely noticed a difference in performance.
Any pics on a HALLTECH installed? Like to see what it looks like and if someone has a picture of its hood liner and how much it rubs, that would be great too...
StevieB is correct in that he is one of the few, if not the only one to have hood issues with the tunnelbridge that comes with the Stinger-R. Halltech has sold hundreds, so the percentage is extremely low.
Both filters are very good and are probably close in flow capability, but more serious mods such as the installation of heads/cam or supercharger would give the Halltech system the advantage, since its tunnel bridge and smooth TB coupler provide a larger flow path than a Blackwing's setup, which utilizes the smaller stock tunnelbridge and accordian throttlebody coupler. Also keep in mind that these systems are similarly priced, so not many will argue that the Halltech Stinger-R represents the better bang-for-the-buck system.
I wish I could post pics, but this forum is holding them captive for the time being. However, if you go to www.corvettec5.com and look at the bottom of the page, you'll see a pic of the Stinger installed. Click on it to blow it up to viewing size.
I put the Halltech on my 01 Z. Not fitment problems, doesn't touch the headliner, quality is great! From what I have read, some of the fitment issues are due to installation (pushing the air bridge up too far into the coupler) and some are just oddities out of the Bowling Green plant that can't be explained. For the money, I think the Halltech Stinger is great!!
I installed my Halltech Stinger on Friday night with no issues closing the hood at all. Thanks to Dave68 for the great install directions! I definitely noticed a quicker response time and a more aggressive SOTP feel when I got on it. I love the air sucking sound that can be heard from the filter and the lower exhaust tone too.

Heard good things about the performance of the Stinger. I currently have the Blackwing and like it. The fitment is good, but if I had to do it all over again, I would have to give the Stinger some very serious consideration.
