Default key fob

We were out in the Vette last night stopped for dinner the remote didn't work. I thought it needed a battery witch I changed out today. Tried to synchronize, no go, then tried a fob relearn no go. Is the remote dead, or could there be something else going on. Plus I only have the 1 remote, where is the best place to buy new ones. The manual say's if you do get new ones you have to go to the dealer for programming, but I thought you can just do a relearn. Last, is the remotes year specfic, thanks Jim.

Take it completely apart and clean off all the electrical contacts with MEK, or some other solvent, and a Q-tip.

Clean off the battery as well.

They usually come back to life. The battery lasts a long time.

Make sure you know the part numbers you need and look on Ebay.

Check the C5 parts section often, I just sold both of mine! They are for sale there often.

Jim,
Try cleaning it as Ztheusa suggest and make sure the battery is installed correctly.
You can find remotes on Ebay or in the Forum's Parts for Sale section.
It is not necessary to go to the dealer. You can program it yourself.
You need a remote with the passive switch for 97-99.
Part # GM 10253839.

On this subject, I have a FOB that I have to re-sync with the car if I don't use it for a couple of days. I cleaned the contacts, and the problem continues.

Basically, if I use the FOB daily, everything is fine. If I don't use it for some period of time (48 hours) then it I have to re-sync it, at which point everything is ok. Does this sound like a FOB problem or something else?

Is relearn the same as reprogram? I just purchased a 99 and I am having similar dead FOB problems. I tried the relearn sequence in the manual and it was a no go. Went to the dealer and a new one was $170.00.
I'll try to clean it like you are suggesting, thanks.
