Default M6 Transmission question

I just recently passed the 50k mark on my 97 and the transmission seems to be at times very "notchy." I want to change out the transmission fluid to smoothen it up. I remember a while back a post about this, but couldnt find it..
What kind of fluid would u recommend? Which will not "damage" the tranny, and what will be best overall?

Thanks for any comments,

Dan

Redline D4 ATF is what I and quite a few members have been using. This came standard in my Camaro SS and I continued using it in the Corvette. Redline has this transmission (T56) on their list of applications.
The use of automatic fluid for manual transmissions became the norm abot 10 years ago. You need 4 quarts (actually about 3.5)

I put Redline in last year. Others on the forum also recommend Amsoil.

The factory fill is Dexron ATF (not synthetic). Redline, Amsoil and Mobil-1 are synthetic.

also. I had to rebuild my 97's transmission at 40k and we put in REDLINE when it was finished. Good stuff!

Synthetic is definitely the way to go. Got that from Dave McClellan at a seminar I attended. He suggests it for the rear end also. The reason being that it handles heat much better than anything else. That's from the biggest Guru I know of. Hope it helps you make your decision. As far a brands I think I'll be using Mobil 1. No brands were discussed at the seminar.

After looking into all the alternatives including things that are not on the recommended list I came up with using either Amsoil atf or Mobil 1 atf. I will probably change to Amsoil after a fair bit of input from Subdriver. Check out his posts on the subject.
I plan to change it out soon as I get a proper jack. Come to think of it, I am going to go with Amsoil. Really good specs.

How much do places charge to put Amsoil in the tranny?

Just a slight correction on the rear end. For a very short time GM produced C5s with conventional differential fluid. From what I understand they were getting some heat related failures and GM quickly switched to a synthetic 75w/90 fluid which needs about 4% friction modifier for the limited slip feature.

Some fluids like Redline already have the FM mixed in.
